Well this is embarrassing.

I've never been a fan of Doctor Who, since is only marginally science fiction. But I just watched the first two episodes of Series 14, and I rather enjoyed them.

[1] I personally like scifi that if it cannot be scientifically accurate, is at least internally self consistent. E.g. the history of baby station.

[2] I am fond of movies and shows where the characters are nonplussed by absurd things that go shambling by. E.g. the goblin ship.

My current desktop is 2016 and it's still doing just fine.

(since it is debian it is no longer "jessie" but currently 12.5 "bookworm". No re-installs since 2016. Just "apt full-upgrade")

A journalist sent me a bunch of questions about Baby Reindeer, so I watched it this weekend, and not only did I not answer the questions, but now I really need to watch something that is not about stalking and sexual assault.

steinarb,
@steinarb@mastodon.social avatar

@evacide Wife is watching that right now.

I have to remove myself from hearing distance of the telly when it's shown.

I found that crunching peanuts made it possible for me to sit in the same room, reading Stephen King's "The Drawing of the Three" (I'm on a Dark Tower/Gunslinger read).

(The main character is such a dumbass asshole, that it is hard to sympathize)

There should be WhatTheFont for screws. I take a picture of a weird tiny screw and then they mail me a package of them.

@ratkins @wdh In Oslo it used to be these guys https://tingstad.no/

But last time I tried to use them they couldn't find what I needed: a replacement bolt for the replacment bolt I got from a VAG shop in Austria that I rolled carefully into after losing a bolt in my front brake caliper of my motorcycle, just as I entered the 50 zone of a small dorf.

Lucky that didn't happen at speed on the Autobahn...

Swedish astronomer, physicist, and mathematician Anders Celsius died in 1744.

In 1742, Celsius introduced the temperature scale that bears his name. His original scale was actually the reverse of what we use today: it set the boiling point of water at 0 degrees & the freezing point at 100 degrees. However, shortly after his death, the scale was reversed by Carl Linnaeus, resulting in the 0 degrees for freezing & 100 degrees for boiling that we are familiar with.

@gutenberg_org Title of the article in the picture: "A new way to fish in the rivers of Norrland"

Is that the temperature article or is it something different?

It will surprise some of you that I actually do agree with the dead internet theory. There is zero doubt that the internet has become progressively crappier over the course of the last decade or so, since automated content started being pushed out. People added "reddit" to their search strings for quite a while, just to insure that they reached human experts.

Inevitably, in time, automated content will get better and more useable, and less corporate, perhaps most critically.

steinarb,
@steinarb@mastodon.social avatar

@fatsam Yeah.

I pay wikipedia once for every funding drive (luckily they have an "I paid elsewhere" checkbox). Usually pay the recommended amount.

I also pay for mastodon.social (just a little bit, but I pay).

Stuff cost. People have bills to pay.

@Vigdisol En genetiker som heter Adam Rutherford har i sin bok "A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived" en artig vri på det med "rett nedadstigende linje".

Se på stamtreet ditt: du har to foreldre, fire besteforeldre, åtte oldeforeldre osv.

"Oi! Det må ha vært mange folk før i tida!", tenker du...

Men nei... det var faktisk færre folk før i tida... så hva betyr det...?

steinarb,
@steinarb@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross Ok! Now our 1998 or 1999 vintage Bosch dishwasher has more or less thrown in the towel.

It makes very strange (stranger than before) mechanical sounds that don't sound good and it doesn't clean the dishes anymore.

So I've been looking into a replacement.

However, finding one that doesn't have wi-fi reduced the field significantly... that excluded all Boschen...

Also, few seems to have a cutlery basket for vertical cutlery anymore?

It seems to be all cutlery drawers now...?

DARPA are soliciting proposals for how to build a train on the Moon: https://www.businessinsider.com/darpa-futuristic-lunar-railroad-solutions-astronauts-living-moon-2024-3

Given the goal is to minimize exposure of moving parts to abrasive moon dust, and one option is a maglev track, has anyone proposed wrapping the maglev sheet in a loop and making a magnetically levitated caterpillar track? ie. a tank track that uses electromagnetic levitation and induction instead of wheels?

Just finished re-read for the first time of a book bought late 84 or early 85 (I bought the book after I had seen the Lynch movie)

The arabic and muslim background of the fremen is much more present in this book than in either of the three film/tv-isations.

And the scenes common to them are all in the book.

Impressive book to be written without text processing, really.
