Why do some languages have gendered nouns. It's just an all around terrible idea.

I'm trying to learn French and have to remember that a table is somehow feminine and a bicycle is somehow masculine.

In theory, Germany has no on the Autobahn, which is generating a lot of bullshit political fights between the Greens and FDP. In practice, there's so much traffic congestion that the effective speed isn't higher than in France or Italy; car guys apparently go to Italy with its high-toll, low-congestion autostrade to test-drive their cars at 200 km/h.

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon and Germany has the world's most famous public-road-which-is-also-a-racetrack, far more exciting than straight line speed.

A webpage for a "Noble" crypto project, where each piece of text slides into view on scroll

Here is a comparison of the new apt(8) UX vs the classic apt-get(8) one for the install command.

Not duplicating the listing for dependencies means that despite having more padding (of sorts) it actually is comparable in length, but much more readable.

@juliank I can hear the sound of thousands of shell scripts breaking simultaneously across the internet.

I'm slowly being radicalized to the idea that all interesting land use should be exclusively concentrated in a small urban core that is served by radial spoke transit lines.

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon Paris city area is 40sq.mi., which is an entirely reasonable urban core size for a metro area of 15 million people, give or take. It's not 1850 anymore.

Can someone please explain why, on a planet with 5 billion too many people and , declining birthrates are a problem?

I'm at a loss.

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer exactly which 5 billion people are the surplus population, from a leftist perspective.

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@LeftistLawyer When you say the Earth is over populated surely you must have an idea on where it's over populated.

Bold of HBO to release a show that opens with a Cultural Revolution scene where a man is beaten to death.

@Alon I was saying to myself "this dialogue about the Big Bang being counter-revolutionary is a bit of a stretch" but then remembered Stalin had dozens of astronomers murdered for looking at sun spots.

When I make factual observations about the state of our current society – uncomfortable but undeniable truths – I get many people in my mentions (and real life) sneering “What do you want, a revolution? Is that what you want? Sounds like that’s the only way out, huh?”

I didn’t say that. Yet when looking at the hard facts – the uncomfortable and overwhelming ones – you guys keep mentioning it. Like that’s the only conclusion you assumed someone would reach. Like it’s really urgent and obvious.

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@ryanhoulihan there won't be a revolution in this country in my lifetime or yours

A driver speeding in the bus lanes on International killed our neighbor Guadalupe while she was crossing the street

Please join Guadalupe's family and neighbors this Saturday, October 14th at 11:00 am at 54th / International to remember Guadalupe and demand that keep us all safe from traffic violence

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@SafeStreetRebel @RapidResponseTeam pretty sure a person making the intentional decision to use the bus lane as their personal express lane is responsible here. Design doesn’t matter a bit if traffic restrictions are completely optional and unenforced.

Due to extreme construction costs, Rishi Sunak has just canceled most of High Speed 2. The London-Birmingham leg will stay, but the legs north of Birmingham are scrapped; trains to Manchester will use the legacy West Coast Main Line north of Birmingham. This is why costs matter. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/oct/02/hs2-rishi-sunak-scrapping-manchester-leg https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/hs2-delayed-rishi-sunak-jeremy-hunt-b2418777.html

wooliex,
@wooliex@mastodon.social avatar

@Alon costs don’t matter because decision makers never ride the train anyway, the existence or non-existence of the finished project is of no consequence.

Every time you tell someone to put a content warning here, someone either goes back to Birdsite or switches to Bluesky. Stop. If you don't like how this is no longer the exclusive space it was before 2022, go write in a fucking diary. https://bsky.app/profile/retr0.id/post/3k5npvjynxd2j

EDIT: since Bluesky doesn't let you view posts without registering, this is @retr0id complaining that multiple people on Fedi asked him to CW a crab pic. In @-replies, people agreed and said that for similar reasons, Fedi was hopeless.
