reminder that if Netanyahu & the US gets away with this in — targeting journalists, targeting hospitals and schools and refugee camps, starving millions of children, mass murder on the scale of tens of thousands, shutting down press, internet and information, killing humanitarian workers, preventing crucial aid convoy, firing on people receiving aid, and planning resettlement of regions based on ethnic identity — these methods will be normalized & advanced by other western nations & govts

nilsskirnir,

@seachanger
Agree. However, US has done this several times since WW2, as well as targeting civilian populations. Example include Korea, VN, Iraq2, among others.
The methods are already normalized in US. As long as the victims are POC.

Thanks for your support here! Whether I win or not is immaterial. Being longlisted alongside 9 other fantastic entries from Al Jazeera, NY Times, Washington Post, BBC & ICIJ is cool as it is.

Democrats won't like to hear this, but according to my preliminary analysis, if Democrats win all of the races they could win, they will have a net loss of one senate seat in this November's elections.

That puts the senate at 50/50 Dems versus Republicans, with the Vice President as the tie-breaker.

Couple this with the reality that Biden is just as likely to lose in November as win, and it's bad news for Democrats.

Democrats couldn't modernize, but now the demographics are breaking hard against the party. Everyone assumed that the shifting demographics would hurt Republicans more than Democrats. It didn't turn out that way, Republicans got ahead of the problem and for decades they've been appealing directly to racist white people. They're stoking a race war and filling their ranks with more racist white people. This nation produces more white racists than it does F-150s.

nilsskirnir,

@arrrg
in 2020, 60% of those who identified as White, voted for Trump. In Red and Purple States, I'm guessing it was over 70%.
Democrats, such as the a-hats at DKos, kept arguing that the new demographics would save them. Never reckoned with White alienation and complexity of the Hispanic vote.

Here's a good article regarding the real intent of the Repuke's attack on abortion. It is what some really insightful folks and I have been saying all along, that the attack is really a step towards rolling women's rights back to 1900. In effect, recriminalizing womanhood.
Also touches on how Dems have been fighting too narrow a battle and should state the obvious, i.e. Repukes believe in barefoot, ignorant, and pregnant as the desired state for women.

No real national mobilization, continuing to field national sports teams overseas, and conscription age at 27?
At some point soon have to decide whether to go have draconian mobilization or negotiate a peace. Unless they are hoping for more direct western intervention.

Crapitalism needs infinitely expanding demand or else the system will collapse. The easiest way to achieve this demand is via infinitely expanding population.

Modern warfare puts a big toll on weaponry. Even US had to recently cancel a howitzer program because the shells caused the howitzer barrels to crack faster than planned.

nilsskirnir,

@claralistensprechen3rd @htTweets
The Third World War by Hackett, a good strategic, if overly optimistic book about a new world war, does stress how after a few months of war the conventional weaponry is exhausted and nations bankrupt. This and prospect of defeat leads to a nuke exchange.
Nb: The book was written in 1985, when most weaponry was orders of magnitude less expensive and complex than today.

One tool in the patriarchy toolbox. Deny women education, prevent advanced cognition, burden them with childcare, increase despair, and increase depression.
Thus, preventing any hope and political action and reinforcing patriarchy. Has been used for thousands of years across virtually all societies, including all Euro states, Asia, and US

According to this "no losses" theory, nothing with FTX, Theranos, Bernie Madoff, or Enron was a crime or even a civil violation until the entire thing came crashing down. It's perfectly fine to lie about millions of dollars unless it goes bad, then it's retroactively illegal. 🙄

nilsskirnir,

Apparently it's only a crime if we peasants mislead lenders on mortgage applications, even if we always make all our mortgage payments on time. Or if we peons lie on a CV, but still do a great job and company suffers no losses.

I have just discovered that those odd waste/recycling bins that are all over the oldest bits of Bergen, Norway, link to an UNDERGROUND PNEUMATIC WASTE TRANSPORT SYSTEM. The waste collects for a bit and then WHOOSH... it's off to the recycling centre. All underground. No bin lorries (garbage trucks), fewer road vehicles, less noise... amazing. @davidho says that my (considerable) excitement about this is entirely unreasonable. I disagree.
https://www.envacgroup.com/how-it-works/the-envac-system/

nilsskirnir,

@helenczerski @davidho
In the US and Australia, all the recycling bins are picked up by separate recycling trucks which take the stuff directly to a recycling warehouse. From there the stuff is shipped directly to a landfill, incinerator, or overseas.

Further proof that the Canadian housing crisis really has been insane for over 20 years, with apparently no end in sight.

nilsskirnir, (edited )

@notjustbikes
Not unlike Australia, Canada is a country with an enormous amount of foreign ownership and foreign REIT`s investment in homes. This is particularly bad in both countries because both have relatively small populations in relation to the number and amount of these. That is, the amount of money coming in from overseas overwhelms the mechanisms of the local markets and completely skews the costs.

#Canada 🇨🇦 / Parliament to vote on motion backing Palestinian 🇵🇸 statehood

[…] Canadian legislators are due on Monday to vote on a non-binding motion backing Palestinian statehood that has drawn condemnation from #Israel and that could deepen splits inside the ruling Liberal Party.

[…] "Justin Trudeau could take bold steps for peace and justice, but he doesn't have the courage. That's why we brought a motion to force the Liberal government to finally help end this bloodshed," NDP leader Jagmeet Singh said in a statement, saying Palestinians and Israelis both deserve to live in peace.

[…] The motion calls on Canada to "officially recognize the State of Palestine" - a step that no member of the Group of Seven industrialised nations has taken - and suspend all trade in military goods and technology with Israel.
