One of the things I like about Linux is you have a choice.

You see, unlike Windows, which follows the lead of Microsoft, or MacOS, which follows the lead of Apple, Linux as an operating system is whatever you make it.

I can switch from one Linux development distribution (distro) to another. For example, I can follow the lead of SUSE with either openSUSE or SLE, and tomorrow, decide I want to jump ship into Red Hat's lead with either Red Hat, or Fedora.

Or follow no one, and make my own path.

Linux_Is_Best,

Linux is all about choice.

Once I have decided what Linux distro I wish to use (including, possibly, my own), I can also decide how my copy of Linux will operate and not just what settings I choose.

For example, in Microsoft Windows, the file manager is Explorer. It is embedded into everything and even if you were to find a 3rd party file manager, Windows would always default back to Explorer.

But on Linux, the choice is yours. You can install and uninstall and configure anything you want.

Linux_Is_Best,

It is one of the reasons why I like Mastodon, and the Fediverse

Speaking as someone who works for a centralized social media company (Meta), when you're using their products and services, you follow their lead. That includes the power to influence what goes viral and what sits alone between you and your small group of friends

It's their world, and you are just experiencing it.

But within the Fediverse, the way it is meant to work (ideally) is no one person or group can dictate your experience

Linux_Is_Best,

Speaking as someone who grew up with the early internet, much of it centralized, and that often mean people collectively gathering around centralized post boards, bulletin boards, forums, and later centralized social media, the concept of the Fediverse is a welcomed one.

The idea that you can either pick an instance or create your own, while keeping your content and still being connected to the greater community, is truly something that has been long overdue, in my opinion. - A vision long held

Linux_Is_Best,

However, the risk of the Fediverse is that it can become "de facto" centralized.

Human beings are creatures of habit and who usually crave socialization and connecting with one another.

That is to say, we can still be tribal, and that means we tend to collectively join together in a single unified space.

A single instance grown too large and too influential within the Fediverse may not directly control the whole, but could become the "de facto" centralized influence.

Linux_Is_Best,

At the moment, one of the larger instances for Mastodon and within the Fediverse is Mastodon Dot Social.

While I may be more known here, and I run the risk of alienating myself, leaving here, I think it's important to exercise that freedom of choice we all have and gracefully choose a new instance to call home.

I, would rather not contribute to what could unintentionally become a "de facto" centralized unity within the Fediverse.

It's funny, how I ended up having 3 accounts on Mastodon. 🤣

This was my 1st. I made it innocently enough.

But then Vivaldi joined Mastodon, which means my user account there, by extension ended up having its own Mastodon account. That is how account 2 came into being.

Today, I wanted to test if an issue I had been witnessing could be confirmed and reproduced. That meant needing to use a new account that hadn't been established or previously part of the Fediverse (3).

Time to consolidate. 🤣

Linux_Is_Best, to mastodon

The screenshot shows that mastodon dot social incorrectly reports that the account on mstdn dot social has no follower, no posts, and no avatar.

The reality is 2 people follow the other account (myself included), it has 5 posts, and it has an avatar.

This is the issue I am noticing on Mastodon as of late.

#Mastodon #Fediverse

Linux_Is_Best,

I don't as yet, have plans to leave Mastodon dot social

I did this as a test to see how the Fediverse is currently working, and to verify if what I have been seeing was indeed happening or not.

At the moment, not everything seems to be correctly populating.

Linux_Is_Best,

I would be curious to know your thoughts on this, @stux since I used your instance in my test.

Linux_Is_Best,

@lerekofatwgo

I think it is a Mastodon dot social problem, because Vivaldi dot net is not having the issue when looking up mstdn dot social.

Linux_Is_Best,

@stux

Who decides if someone is "known" ?

Linux_Is_Best, to random

I'm testing something I said earlier as @Linux_Is_Best on mastodon dot social

Particularly, how not everything populates correctly.

In this example, I have created a new account on mstdn dot social, added who I follow, added a new avatar, and this post (which you're reading here).

Linux_Is_Best,

@Linux_Is_Best And yet, it took more than a while before that post even showed up. My avatar is still not viewable, and you'd think from this side of things, I was only following 14 people, and not 50.

Linux_Is_Best, to random

1st misinformation account I have seen on Mastodon.

The whole account is dedicated to claiming that green renewable energy is bad for people and the environment.

They start with the typical nonsense about how birds and bats will go extinct by the sheer volume of bird and bat deaths caused by wind turbines. But they go further, even claiming how whales out in the ocean are also at risk. 🤣 🙄

I've blocked windwatchorg@mstdn.social

Linux_Is_Best,

@fabiocosta0305

No doubt, we live in an imperfect universe, on an imperfect world, and anyone who tells you anything is absolutely perfect, is likely either lying or fooling themselves.

But generally speaking, overall, green energy is not harming the world we live in. Nor has of yet any mainstream green energy been widely proven to negatively impact people and animals (plants included).

Linux_Is_Best,

@fabiocosta0305

I agree.

Our negative impact on our environment is complicated, and by that I mean, there isn't just one single thing we can change right now, that will solve everything. It is going to take many different changes from many parts of the world and daily life.

Transportation, both personal and commercial, are one of those things that need to be addressed.

📺 Starting tomorrow, you will only be able to use one of the following UI designs on your computer. Which one will you choose, and why? 😶‍🌫️

Linux_Is_Best,

@muzej

Option "B" is good enough for Linux, Apple MacOS, BSD, and Windows, and has been the norm for years.

I remember, option "A" years ago. It was basic enough and got the job done, but it was limited.

Option "C" was not normalized.

I'm going to pick, B.

Linux_Is_Best, to debian

Debian offers a LIVE CD.

This allows you to try Debian Linux before you install. It also can make the installation a little user friendlier.

I suggest for newbies that you pick any flavor of their LIVE CD, except "standard."

Standard will install a terminal and that's it. Great if you want to build up from basic, but if you want a working desktop after install, pick a flavor (Kde, lxqt, etc...)

Linux_Is_Best, to mastodon

Mastodon.social doesn't always populate Fediverse feeds.

For example, @n3m3s1s when viewed on Mastodon, shows 0 (Zero) post.

But if you click on that link that reads: "Browse more on the original profile" which takes them to their page, you can see they are clearly active.

I have known about this issue for a while and am curious if anyone else has noticed this (or reported this issue).

Linux_Is_Best,

@hirad @n3m3s1s

I don't know if that is accurate.

I can create a new account on a difference instance and see everything fine. -- By that, I mean, be logged into my mastodon dot social account and see the post on the new account.

The issue seems to be random.

Linux_Is_Best,

Sadly, following someone does not make it available either.

Again, using @n3m3s1s as an example (Hi there), even when following them, you still do not see any post.

They're not alone, either.

There have been more than a few users from many different instances that show up as "nothing" when viewing their profile, but if you actually go visit their page, they're active.

Linux_Is_Best,

@hirad @n3m3s1s

If you follow the thread, you'll note I am following them, but still see nothing.

Linux_Is_Best, to windows

"OMG, why are so many people online trying to convince me and everyone else to try Linux?"

Because we care.

Speaking for myself, I was once a Windows user. In fact, I had ties so close with Microsoft that I was often given free software and hardware.

That's how close I was to Microsoft

While it was a fun ride, it was also a frustrating one. I had a "love, hate" relationship with MS and Windows

I often had the same frustrations and annoyances most people experience

Linux_Is_Best,

@Vincent392 At the time, I thought it was ironic. The very copy, Microsoft provided me, couldn't pass their own verification test.
