I am a climber, runner, cyclist and swimmer. In between that I run a small (but perfectly formed) analytics company, splitting my time between Edinburgh, The Highlands and The Borders, campaign for Scottish independence, bake bread and occasionally dabble in bad art.

alda, to Iceland
@alda@topspicy.social avatar

One advice I've given to older Germans about travelling to #Iceland whilst taking their car with them is to spend more time in the Faroe Islands instead.

The Faroe Islands are much better at fulfilling their ideas about heimatromantik, their culture is generally more to their liking and the distances are shorter.

Not to mention that the ferry terminal in Iceland is at the opposite side of the country, (ca. 700 km away) in case you ever want to visit Reykjavik.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@alda the Faroes are wonderful, but we always recommend both with a longer trip. Ferry from Denmark with a stop for a week or so in the Faroes. You don’t have to travel across Iceland to enjoy its beauty, although I love Reykjavik.

‘Joy and laughter’: the Leicester rugby team for children with Down’s syndrome

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jun/05/joy-and-laughter-the-leicester-rugby-team-for-children-with-downs-syndrome

A rugby team set up for young people with Down’s syndrome has been described as a “lifeline” by parents who say there is a chronic lack of opportunities for their children.

Inclusion is always a great thing imho. We have made great steps in supporting and integrating people with in the last 25 years. More to do.

Why America’s bird flu outbreak is a warning to the world

http://archive.today/2024.06.06-054943/https://www.thetimes.com/world/us-world/article/bird-flu-symptoms-humans-news-h5n1-flnpk8t5x (archived)

Ionia County has become the ground-zero of an outbreak of the bird flu virus H5N1, long seen as a pathogen with the potential to cause a pandemic

There are already indications that the virus may be slowly getting better at infecting humans.

A combination of apathy mixed with complacency and large commercial farming at least cost is driving this.

A 33 BILLION fiscal black hole which will inevitably lead to swingeing cuts and even MORE austerity and probably the end of the NHS as we know it. If only there was a way to get around this...

and, of course...

UK faces £33bn hole in finances or return to austerity, thinktank says

https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/jun/04/uk-faces-33bn-hole-in-finances-or-return-to-austerity-thinktank-says

So it’s almost official we are stuffed. Obviously living outside our means. Both the ruling parties have told us so.

But only those if means were constrained by selling of public assets overseas, leasing them back at a premium, running down public services to force their privatisation, siphoning monies off to cronies, and…

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

For gods sake, we allow Corporate interests to drive Labour and Conservative politicians (plus some others) to tell the children they preside over what our means are and what our priorities should be while hiding their own interests.

No feckin wonder they want to slash - that is their profit margins we are talking about.

@hanscees @quixoticgeek Honeybees are native - even if cultured bees are a human creation (for more than 2000 years). They are also essential for the survival of many plants. These wasps do predate on all species and are largely parasitic in behaviour. I have to disagree - they are harmful in both the short and longer term.

@FolksVelo Ahh - I could add a Chopper as well, and two tandems and a couple more recumbents but, but here are four machines that have influenced me.

My Windcheetah (here on Arran)
An Airnimal - foldable road bike and designed by a friend of mine
My Cross bike - here near Caithness
My Moulton - lovely little small wheeled bike and good with loads
