Are UK politics really better than those across the pond?

https://www.thenational.scot/politics/24360169.uk-politics-really-better-across-pond/

Well Ruth I think they are - at the moment, but there is a creeping sense of abandonment of principles (however they spell them) by Labour and a growing expectation that Sctland will be shafted by London.

Remember that lots of Scots have to pay more to keep the lights on than their cousins in England’s deep south. Despite exporting it to England.

A secretive and influential Labour group has received a record-breaking amount of political donations in 2024.

https://www.thenational.scot/news/24359087.labour-together-receives-record-breaking-2m-donations-2024/

Politicians are being bought - and selling themselves, wholesale in Westminster. Corrupt and antidemocratic. And of course there will be a price to pay by all of us.

How anti-Israel boycotts have hurt the high street

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-anti-israel-boycotts-hurt-high-street-cxlq23mr8

The Times gets in its regular ‘protests wrong’ message this Sunday morning.

Pro-Palestinian campaigners are using social media and apps to target companies such as McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Barclays and Tesco over alleged links to the IDF

Despite what is claimed, people do know the effects on businesses. Maybe these companies should rethink their strategies. What next - mandatory Starbucks?

Oh dear how sad never mind.

'Broadcaster Iain Dale has dropped a bid to become the new MP for Tunbridge Wells after previous comments he made about the Kent town emerged.

Mr Dale launched his campaign four days ago to become the Conservative candidate to replace outgoing MP Greg Clark.

But after quitting his LBC radio show to stand, a clip from a podcast emerged in which he said he "never liked" Tunbridge Wells and "I'd quite happily live somewhere else".'

admits he flew by private jet to clean energy jobs rally in

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/31/starmer-admits-he-flew-by-private-jet-to-clean-energy-jobs-rally-in-scotland

Let's just forget the shit that he is spewing attempting to excuse his use of a private aircraft (which donor is paying and what are they going to want in return?). BTW ‘carbon offset’ illustrates how little the fucker knows

He finishes off with the Gruaniad highlighting the fact that he know nothin about English or Scots Law.

Excuse the language. I am just so pissed off with the xenophobic Labour Party and it’s pathetic shape shifting ‘leader’.

@ginger_tosser @JackTheCat we could. But if we end up having something to drin (probable) we wouldn’t be safe on cycles either..

hankg, to retrocomputing

It's astounding how modern computer idioms we take for granted could be done with NeXTSTEP in 1991. The live video and on-the-fly editing are even more impressive, albeit requiring the $15K model computer. That was impressive performance for that price at the time too though.

@hankg Interestingly (maybe) I bought it, and a number of others because we really liked Mathematica - which came with the machine. They paid for themselves just for that and its utility.

Scottish crowd confronts Tory candidate amid 'anti-English' comments | The National

https://www.thenational.scot/news/24358175.scottish-crowd-confront-tory-candidate-amid-anti-english-comments/

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat ’A FURIOUS crowd in Perth confronted a Tory candidate who appeared to suggest the SNP were “anti-English”.
At a campaign event in the Fair City, Luke Graham complained about the SNP branding itself as an “internationalist party” as he suggested SNP MPs in the House of Commons express their dislike for “other people on the islands of Great Britain”.’

I am pissed off with this. I am anti Westminster - not English/Irish (I am as well)/American(my partner)

This is encouraged to fester

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@JackTheCat They do have the heavy artillery though. I want to see more repudiation of these slurs. We let the bar stewards get away with these claims.

hembrow, to cycling
@hembrow@todon.eu avatar

I took a short ride for exercise this morning, covering 31 km in 54 minutes with the velomobile, including traffic lights, negotiating other road users etc.

The Mango is far from the quickest velomobile available nowadays, and mine is fitted with slower puncture proof "winter" tyres because I really don't like fixing punctures in the rain, but for the same expended effort it still consistently goes about 15-20% faster than my road/racing bike or my two wheeled recumbent, a touring model which is a little slower than the road bike.

Add in the low maintenance (leading to low running costs), the weather protection and three wheels making winter cycling much safer and there's so much to like. This is the most efficient transport mode in existence and it's also very practical. It's also fun, of course.

There's a calculator here which lets you work out approximately how fast you can cycle with a particular amount of effort on different types of bicycles, and how much energy is required to do that over distance:
https://hembrow.eu/personal/kreuzotter/espeed.htm

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@hembrow I’m intrigued. I’m not using a fully faired recumbent so it is difficult to compare like for like, but my semi fared Kingcycle - (rear and front)- an old bike is faster than my similarly tricked out Windcheetah. That is over a very regular 25k daily ride.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@hembrow @katgraph Hot though?

Wen, (edited )
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@twilwel @hembrow

I quite understand, but even so, a closed compartment is difficult for any distance/speed. I remember riding the Lands End-Groats record setting machine (my photo) over 30k and it was warm work.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@twilwel @hembrow @katgraph My Windcheetah in the summer :-)

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@twilwel @hembrow It still doesn’t :-) But having said that we get on.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@twilwel @hembrow @katgraph

While not wishing to labour a point we have lots of hills - really hilly hills, here. Weight makes a difference.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@twilwel @hembrow @katgraph Our normal route (quick run to the town) has about 800m of climbing (aggregated). A road bike is fastest (but of course doesn’t have panniers), the Windcheetah comes second. The tandem is actually very good as well - but that needs both of us.

Wen,
@Wen@mastodon.scot avatar

@hembrow @katgraph I can see that, ands have ridden a lot of them (although not yours). I still find the full fairing a problem on rides here. I am of the opinion that like may things they are a great solution for urban riding - not so much for us country and hilly dwellers.
