Mastodon is a weird place. Most of the time it feels like it’s just a buncha folks who would rather cruise around on horse drawn buggys. It’s really no surprise why this place didnt take off the way we hoped. Then again that was Eugens whole point.

I hate going down this hole but it really does suck. Someone I know who’s a fairly staunch liberal at work today mentioned how they’re on bluesky. Folks I used to love following like @parkermolloy @owillis @Popehat @nikkimcr completely gave up on this pace and went . I’m starting to think if I should do the same.

Social media is such a drag. Twitter is flooded with folks posting dead children and bad Biden polls. Mastodon is flooded with folks who hate whatever the newest AI development is and the occasional lame boomer meme.

These tendentious arguments about whether it is or isn’t artificial intelligence, how accurate it can be with specific facts, are so beside the point. It’s an incredible tool for distilling all kinds of pertinent facts and information into coherent manuscripts, presentations and advertisements.

I’ve visited a couple of times, but I just don’t get why Austin continues to explode. Good food and music would not be enough. Crazy heat and a climate set to make it worse, awful state politics, sprawled out suburban development style, poor infrastructure, high property taxes, tiny historic center.

@bryan as someone who grew up in central TX, imo Austin is seen as a “left the birds nest” kinda city. As you mentioned TX is sprawled out over abuncha suburbs that remain very conservative. Austin offers a big change for a lot of folks. In my hometown you either moved to Austin or became one of those folks who never left home. As far climate goes people just learn to live with it.

Imagine finding out you're a powerful wizard, and you still have to go to school for 7 years! Also, a guy is trying to kill you the whole time. Are the grown up powerful wizards going to help you? Nope, not really, you have to ask other students to help you not die, but some of them are also evil, sooo watch out for that. But at least you're not living under the stairs all the time, I guess.

The only thing that makes me sad about mastodon is there isn’t an @atrupar or Acyn that can post video clips here. From my understanding it’s apparently a huge pain so I don’t fault them necessarily.
