I bought this reprint of a #swordmanship#fencing book from 1876 which is now in public domain. Inside it has an image with the caption "what to avoid" which it goes on to describe as "the worst that can be imagined - a painful spectacle."... I just cleared out my old fencing stuff. Been planning to do it for a while now, and I decided a chilly rainy day was perfect.
I fenced for nearly 30 years, competing at a high level, winning quite a few tournaments at local, regional, national, and international levels, and I finally am done.
Next thing is to spread all the old local and regional medals out on the table and take a photo, then throw them out.
Here’s a story. Two gold medals, both for a mixed (men and women) veteran (over-40) sabre tournament.
The first one is the “women’s” gold. My referee decided to coach my male opponent in the gold medal bout because “you know how he gets about losing to women.” Older male sabre fencers, man. Antediluvian.
The second is the women’s gold too, different year, but I won the whole event, beating a strong guy and re-earning my B rating.
