I bought this reprint of a #swordmanship#fencing book from 1876 which is now in public domain. Inside it has an image with the caption "what to avoid" which it goes on to describe as "the worst that can be imagined - a painful spectacle."... So which image did the new publisher decide to use as the cover image? Yes, you guessed it... #Fail#YouHadOneJob
I just cleared out my old fencing stuff. Been planning to do it for a while now, and I decided a chilly rainy day was perfect.
I fenced for nearly 30 years, competing at a high level, winning quite a few tournaments at local, regional, national, and international levels, and I finally am done.
Next thing is to spread all the old local and regional medals out on the table and take a photo, then throw them out.
This one, for instance. It was my last tournament, a combined women’s veteran regional in January 2023. I had to really pump myself up to win it and then felt really out of sorts afterwards because it didn’t feel worth it to get so amped.
Here’s a story. Two gold medals, both for a mixed (men and women) veteran (over-40) sabre tournament.
The first one is the “women’s” gold. My referee decided to coach my male opponent in the gold medal bout because “you know how he gets about losing to women.” Older male sabre fencers, man. Antediluvian.
The second is the women’s gold too, different year, but I won the whole event, beating a strong guy and re-earning my B rating.
I tried fencing in school, the sword kind. I was soon disavowed of a few myths. You cannot simply hack the limbs off your opponent, nor do you automatically get a dashing facial scar.
Well, you can imagine my disappointment
I ran the numbers, and this may shock you but by the time a 6-year-old cisgender girl is eligible to compete in the 70+ women's epee world championship, transgender fencer Liz Kocab will almost certainly have won the title 66 years in a row.
I mean... there's no upper age-limit on the 70+ fencing category, and obviously nothing can stop the DOMINATION of trans women in sports, so I don't see how any other outcome could result. #trans#news#sports#fencing
@futurebird Public Service Announcement: if you know any fencers 🤺, have them ask their armorer if they need AC adapters. The ones that come with our score boxes are notoriously flimsy. I’m constantly replacing them. #fencing#armoring
The executive committee of the International Fencing Federation (FIE) has overruled the black card for Ukrainian fencer Olha Kharlan. She will be able to compete at the World Championships, but then she will be suspended for two months.
Olha Kharlan, a Ukrainian fencer who was disqualified at the Fencing World Championship in Italy for her refusal to shake hands with her Russian opponent has been automatically allowed to compete in the Olympics.
Ukraine warned the International Fencing Federation (FIE) on the matter of its athletes refusing to shake hands with their counterparts from Russia, but on 26 July, the FIE dropped the opportunity to do a mandatory ‘salute’ by just tapping sabres. The very next day at the championship in Milan, Ukrainian athlete Olha Kharlan...
