Anarch157a, to steamdeck in Valve’s Good Guy Image Makes Up For The Steam Deck’s Problems
@Anarch157a@lemmy.world avatar

Forbes blogger misses the point completely. News at 11.

Here’s the thing, horsepower means nothing if that’s the only thing the device has. People don’t want just raw performance, there are other soft factors in play, like comfort, convenience, build quality, easy of use, etc. The simple fact that the competitors come with Windows and have no trackpads is already a major turn-off, this by itself makes them inferior products, since Windows notoriously bad with touch-screens, especially when said screen is as small as 7", then there’s the windows updates… Ughh…

Then the compatibility issue. Sure, in theory Windows should be more compatible, in practice… try to run some really old games, like the author casually mentioned. Many will run better with Proton then on Windows itself, if you can make them run at all. Linux already have two excellent library managers, Lutris and Heroic, that make installing non-steam games easier than in Windows, without the need of several resource hogging launchers constantly on the background, so it’s a moot point.

Sure, some multiplayer games don’t run because of the anti-cheat software, but then again, is this really such an issue ? My answer is a big fat NO ! Why ? One word: Gyroscope. Or the lack thereof. Of all 3 devices mentioned in the article, ROG Ally, AyaNeo 2S and Steam Deck, only the deck has it, and guess what, it’s pretty freaking hard to aim properly with sticks in shooter games. Without a gyro, the Ally the 2S players will always be at a disadvantage, which makes the whole endeavor an exercise in frustration, so why bother ?

All in all, a pretty bad, even trollish article. Pretty much what I learned to expect from those Forbes bloggers.

Snowy,

The Ally and AyaNeo 2S both have gyroscopes, although the Ally suffers from a profound lack of first party software support and so far users are having to use two layers of input mapping software to get practical use out of them.

HidingCat,

have no trackpads

Exactly. The Ally is available in my country (and with discounts I can get it cheaper than the equivalent Steam Deck even), but no track pads is a huge huge minus. I play a lot of games that use a mouse, why'd I want something that has inferior mouse support?

phoneymouse,

This alone is the reason I won’t consider it. We’re talking about PC games. The mouse is important. Gtfo with joysticks only.

Ferk, (edited )
Ferk avatar

Moreover, more performance in a portable device is often a trade-off. The board will draw more power, reducing battery life, and it will often generate more heat, requiring more ventilation / fan power which might also further affect battery life (and potentially, its lifespan). You end up paying more for a worse experience, imho.

The new Ayaneo needs a battery that's more than twice the capacity of the Steam Deck in order to be able to even compare to the Steam Deck in autonomy... if Valve launched a revision of the deck with an updated battery it would be a huge improvement, likely doubling its runtime, it's much more efficient than the competition in its power usage.

I'd much prefer games start being designed for low spec devices. What I want is more innovative gameplay and interesting mechanics... if the game wastes immense amounts of power for easthetic reasons, it doesn't make me want to get a portable powerhouse of a console, what it makes me want to do is skip playing that unoptimized game.

well yup and thats what they want the games to be. a service. multiplayer diablo2 was much like an mmo but no servers needed. You could run the server and play with your friends or even open it up but everyone needed to have a copy of the game. so it has been done and they want to do it more and more.

Mango,

While I’m super into self hosting instances, that usually defeats the point of MMOs. The unfortunate truth of the matter is that the publishers of MMOs often defeat the point of their game after long enough anyhow.

All that has generally pushed me towards round based games where the only advantages are my own personal skill.

ripcord,
ripcord avatar

You could ask the same about paying for verification. But a very surprising number of people did that.

I agree with your core point in general, but the reality possibly is "lots of people". The vast, vast majority of people appear to have stuck with TwitX because that's where the people are. People aren't moving to other places because the people aren't there. A jillion organizations, "influencers", wanna-be "influencers", etc are still there because of inertia that surprisingly hasn't run out.

And a whole bunch of idiots have paid for the blue checkmark because they are desperate for attention and think they'll get more views that way. In many cases they're right.

This move, I think, would be more likely to motivate people to move or avoid the platform, but it's ridiculous to me how many people are left after all the other bullshit (including requiring logins, dropping blocking, all the right-wing propaganda and terrible recommendations in general, Musk's behavior, at least a handful of people dropping the platform, etc).

He may be losing money and advertisers but holy shit are a bunch of people still there.

I would imagine people with huge followings and money to burn. Once the paywall is up, those huge followings are going to shrink fast.

He’s never been on the side of Twitter that used to joke “Twitter is free!” whenever funny stuff happened on the site. There are whole parts of Twitter he’s never seen, and he thinks his very narrow use case of Twitter is THE way Twitter is used.

When the running joke used to be “Twitter is free,” no one is going to want to pay for it.

Hiccup,

He fundamentally doesn’t understand what Twitter is/was or does. That’s why this is like watching someone enter a race but keep tripping on their own shoelaces.

stopthatgirl7,
stopthatgirl7 avatar

Nope. Like, he thinks there’s a huge bot problem on Twitter because he has to deal with bots because he’s famous and talks about crypto. Most Twitter users never deal much with bots so it’s not the big concern. But he does, so he thinks blaming bots for all Twitter’s problems is effective.

I bet he was shocked there was pushback for his API changes when it impacted accounts like the NY subway system, who used it to announce schedule delays. I bet I t never occurred to him people actually used Twitter for something other than shitposting.

Ottomateeverything,

The requirement to create an account to view replies/threads is a show stopper for me and it has somehow made Twitter even more useless. It barely had value when it was freely legible but it’s not worth sharing data with them to get festering garbage in return.

Yet he thinks people are going to pay for it?

We live in a world where social media and communication are commoditized as fuck and people refuse to pay premiums for shit they can do for free elsewhere. How is Twitter going to compete with Instagram, Threads, Mastodon, Reddit, and Facebook when it’s arguably the worst choice, objectively the least feature rich, yet the only one that costs money?

notapantsday,

Yet he thinks people are going to pay for it?

The people who produce the garbage will pay for it and maybe a few journalists who want to report on the newest pile of garbage, trying to create enough outrage to generate a few clicks on their shitty “news” site.

Wakmrow,

Those people are already paying though

jballs,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

I think the biggest problem at this point is how much Twitter has replaced a core part of how journalism used to function. Back in the day, if a company/organization/famous person/etc was doing something of note, they would write a press release and send it to news organizations, who would then decide how to cover (or not cover) the story.

Now, shit just gets tweeted out and a good chunk of journalism is just putting a few words around that tweet and calling it news. If Twitter disappeared tomorrow and no clone immediately popped up in its place, modern journalism would collapse.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing.

LLMs are only as “fact based” as the data they source. An LLM in the time of Galileo would have told you the earth is flat.

Galileo’s LLM would tell him that

Assuming the sources used for training were the correct ones.

luthis,

It actually is biased though. UpperEchelon did a video exposing this. I swing to the left myself, but I would prefer if the LLMs were objective.

Phanatik,

It will never be objective if its dataset is something like the internet. It will always be prone to bias because that's the double-edged sword of LLMs, they have to have vast quantities of data and the only place they can get that is the internet which is biased opinions everywhere.

theywilleatthestars,

Political objectivity is impossible.

GigglyBobble, (edited )

Only if emotions are involved. Of course it's not possible as long as we train our AI with flawed human-generated data though.

theywilleatthestars,

LLM’s require human generated data, that’s how they work.

GigglyBobble,

That's how we make them work today. It is possible to stay politically neutral in a language though. And therefore your generalized statement is incorrect.

Renacles,

What does politically neutral even mean though? Because it’s definitely not centrism.

How would you train AI without biased data anyways? All data carries some bias from whoever generated it.

GigglyBobble,

What does politically neutral even mean though?

A conversation being void of any kind of politics is politically neutral. And that's most conversations I have.

Renacles,

Most people don’t agree on what subjects are and aren’t political.

PostmodernPythia,

That’s because people mean very different things by “political.” I use the definition of “a subject related to the (usually human) division of power”, because it makes it rhetorically harder for people to depoliticize their pet causes, so we can actually look at what’s happening.

luthis,

I would argue that asking a machine to list known information is not impossible.

Here’s a very clear example where chatGPT refused to answer a question regarding Biden but happily answered the exact same question for Trump.

youtu.be/_Klkr6PtYzI?t=520

And before anyone starts, NO! I’m not a supporter of the oompaloompa king.

Sekoia,

Mhm, but with the way LLMs work, it’s not possible to actually remove bias since it’s baked into the training data. Any adjustment towards “neutral” would be biased by what the adjuster considers neutral.

Calling attention to this type of shit as a reason to suggest Biden shouldn’t be elected is about as bad faith as it can get. OP has been asked- of the third party candidates, who could beat Trump? They predictably had no response. But if this makes Biden unelectable, they’d better hope that their throwaway choice has never made a mistake in their lives- otherwise, admit this is just another attempt to skew the outcome in their favor. And if they have such a hate boner for Biden, what do you think it could be.

Important note for those who dont want to read the actual article: the ban is essentially saying only some flags can be bought with federal funds and then hung up officially, and the pride flag isn’t one of them. It also doesn’t prohibit personal displays, so while they can’t be on flag poles or bought with federal funds, they can still be displayed. Interestingly, the bill also bans the confederate flag. It’s still just bigotry being forced by the GOP but there’s always more context than a headline can provide.
