Well, you knew that was coming from the licensing changes.

Ansible and Terraform united. Make something out of it IBM.

Lemme fix the headline for you.

HashiCorp joins the list of companies and software killed by IBM.

karpintero, to selfhosted in HashiCorp joins IBM to accelerate multi-cloud automation

$6.4B for HashiCorp on the heels of $4.6B for Apptio and $34B for Red Hat back in 2018. I wonder how long until they expect each of these acquisitions to be accretive?

AAA,

Acquisitions don’t need to pay for themselves. Ideally they do, but sometimes it’s enough if they just help the company’s main business stay in business, or grow.

IBM is making $30bn+ in gross profit each year.

haui_lemmy,

One of the many companies that should definitely be barred from acquiring any more companies and rather be broken up into smaller companies.

AAA,

Double edged sword, but yeah.

haui_lemmy,

Not at all. Nation sized companies are authoritarian rogue-states which happen to provide a good product. We should treat them as the danger to our planet that they are.

OpenTofu is the open source fork of Terraform

ErwinLottemann,

any alternative to vault you know of?

johntash,

OpenBao is the open source fork of Vault

lemmyvore,

And both OpenTofu and OpenBao are managed by the Linux Foundation so they’re in for the long haul.

johntash,

Any idea if there’s a fork of Nomad and Consul?

lemmyvore,

I don’t know of any fork that’s specifically made of Nomad but maybe because it has a ton of open source competition, there’s Kubernetes, K3s, Proxmox, Docker Swarm, Mesos and a bunch of others.

etcd might cover Consul. I’m not familiar with that side of ops. Do some searches on reddit. The thing is, you typically want several such products that work well together if you want a full solution. It depends on your needs. Each product individually has alternatives but when you put them together they can fit well or not.

greysemanticist,

OpenBao openbao.org

(making a note for myself.)

lwe,

Similar theme to open tofu. openbao.org

elzapp,

Which also IBM is one of the core contributers to

lwe,

Well. Let’s see how that turns out.

Because of this, or something else?

housepanther, to sysadmin in Hashicorp Adopts BSL License

That just read like a whole bunch of corporate whining. Looks like I won’t be using anything HashiCorp related. Don’t press on my back and tell me it’s raining. This BSL license is not free open source. Fuck off with that shit.

slazer2au,

opentf.org

Already a push to create a foundation based owner of a terraform fork.

housepanther,

Glad to hear it!

The Terrawork (Terragrunt) people have posted their latest response. It looks like multiple companies have banded together and are fully behind forking Terraform, if required.

i know someone i used to work with who went there because he was effectively their employee bc of how much he contributed via open source and in community

Was considering Vault but yeah, no. I hope there’s a good alternative

wiki_me, to foss in HashiCorp adopts Business Source License

People might not like this change, but if it helps them makes money that gets put back into the project maybe that is a good thing (for those who does not know, it converts to a open source license after four years), maybe that is better then a open core model.

Zapp,

Yeah. I’ve always thought timed open source was probably a sweet spot, but I don’t have a lot of trust that companies will actually follow through on the open license at the end, so it doesn’t buy my goodwill just yet.

wiki_me,

IANAL but don’t think they can opted out of it , it’s part of the license

Effective on the Change Date, or the fourth anniversary of the first publicly available distribution of a specific version of the Licensed Work under this License, whichever comes first, the Licensor hereby grants you rights under the terms of the Change License, and the rights granted in the paragraph above terminate.

Zapp,

Neat.

corsicanguppy, to service_clouds in Hashicorp's license change and what it means for the Terraform community

Guess they wanted the same pork as the scumbags who did the same before.

“Because they were dicks we can be dicks” isn’t justification.

Anyway, maybe the bugs will be fixed. We don’t call it “mushycore” because it’s fully-cooked before they dash off and rebuild core pieces for fun.

And I’m sorry that people won’t be as willing to contribute now. We’ll continue to contribute to the cincs of the world.
