flawed,

What would you call a society this genocidal whose blood thirst is still at this, after massacring 30,000 Palestinians & still continue to massacre them?

Most protests we hear about removing Nethanyahu are largely about internal power struggle, but not against genocide itself.

"It is now mainstream within Israeli society to discuss from which age it is acceptable for children to be starved. A recent discussion on the mainstream public broadcaster news program reached a consensus between a former Mossad official and the veteran host that children over the age of 4 were legitimate to starve. @Mary625 @oatmeal The sheer amount of willful blindness is horrifying. We have closed our eyes and said "But we have to stand up for the Israelis, they are the GOOD guys!" And because we have had our eyes firmly closed, thinking only of our strategic interests in the area, we have failed to notice as they had taken our aid and become the bad guys.

Not that they are alone in that. Israel is not truly our friend, it just wants our arms. Saudi Arabia is not our friend, it just likes our oil money. Iran, Iraq, Syria are CERTAINLY not our friends. Neither is Yemen.

I'm not at all convinced we HAVE any actual friends in the Middle East.

violetmadder,

@zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal

I keep remembering the very educational discussion where someone actually claimed that what Israel has been doing to the Palestians was not only "not occupation", but "not violence".

That was shortly after Oct 7, I'm wondering if they still maintain that belief. Probably.

People can look at this situation and convince themselves it's not even violence. The scale of the self-delusion is so far beyond anything I'd ever imagined possible... but it sure explains a lot.

It's so frightening. How do we wake the world up from lies that deep?

NickSchwanck,
@NickSchwanck@aus.social avatar

@zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal
Flip that.
I take your point. But...
I'm Australian. The US has military bases in my country including Pine Gap which, apparently, is no longer Australian soil.
I'm under no illusion that the "alliance" benefits the US who promise "security" but demand participation in crimes from Korea to Afghanistan.
Our "friendship" costs Australian lives.
Do I believe the promise of security.

No.

Countries have interests. Not friends.

hfinyow,

@NickSchwanck @zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal maybe it's time for Australia to forge better relations with Indonesia and China....the otherwise two biggest military threats to Australia. The USA will ditch Australia in a heartbeat if it's going to cost them too much.

NickSchwanck,
@NickSchwanck@aus.social avatar

@hfinyow @zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal Australian governments of the past have had great success with exactly that. It's usually progressive governments that see that sense. Then the conservatives get in on the basis of racism (which continues to win votes here) and they undo everything.
There's an old saying that goes "Australia is a lucky country run by second-rate people who share its luck." This is largely true.
But the American soft-occupation of this country is not an Australian failing.

hfinyow,

@NickSchwanck @zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal Canada similarly goes along with America's misadventures, but for different reasons. Australia is hoping for security from the US. Canada is hoping not to get invaded by the US

NickSchwanck,
@NickSchwanck@aus.social avatar

@hfinyow @zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal Only fools (inside and outside of government) in this country believe the promise of security.
Similarly, only fools don't believe that the US would do here what they've done in nations from Korea and Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan should they suddenly want what we have.

hfinyow,

@NickSchwanck @zakalwe @Mary625 @oatmeal I remember when I was about 7, my father cynically saying to me that the USA will be our ally so long as we behave like good Americans.

Captainobservant,

@flawed @palestine where will this end ? Latest estimate is around 40,000 deaths, but deaths could rise to half a million or more unless humanitarian assistance is restored. Israel has no mercy for Palestinians, is virtually dancing on their graves. The world must do something before it is too late.
