From Al Jazeera's live feed:

'The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has recovered the bodies of two of its paramedics who were killed in Rafah’s Tal as-Sultan area last night...

' “The Israeli occupation forces deliberately bombed the ambulance vehicle despite it bearing the internationally protected Red Crescent emblem,” PRCS said in a post on X.'

Since October 7, 19 PRCS medics have been killed in Gaza while on the job, according to the organisation

I don't remember reading about the East London attack on a Ukrainian business, though the Polish fire was widely reported. Of course Putler's people would do just that, wouldn't they? Destroy everything, build nothing. A black hole of depravity and violence. https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/may/30/europe-on-high-alert-after-suspected-moscow-linked-arson-and-sabotage

@Geri We knew that when they stole billions from us to enrich their mates during the pandemic (and after).

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@Geri I don't know what that's a response to, but it looks a bit patronising to me. Oh, and the classical music posts get next to zero attention on here. The one reason I regret leaving Twitter. But I'm not going on to any other social media.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@Geri OK, accepted, thanks. I like the discussions I have on here, having accepted that classical music will never be part of them. I save that for my blog (which runs the gamut) and, obviously, for the Zoom courses, Arts Desk and other freelance work. I do want to learn other points of view, though. And I only engage with folk with whom there's plenty of political and ethical overlap.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@Geri Sibelius is some kind of essence for me. The Karelia Suite is good light music - he hardly ever wrote a dud movement - but the symphonies and tone-poems are something else. And universal, too, though Germans still seem to have trouble with their unorthodox forms.

I've written a lot about him on the blog. Here's the first of five entries about his immaculately-preserved home in Järvenpää, where I was privileged to spend many hours with only the curator: http://davidnice.blogspot.com/2010/03/sibelius-at-home.html

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@Paulos_the_fog @Geri You mean the Intermezzo? Yup, it's about half a minute quicker than most, quite a bit in a three minute piece. But I like it that way.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@Paulos_the_fog @Geri Probably wouldn't have survived the era. Not that much interested in him as a conductor, but he did an awful lot. Back to Sibelius!

"Mexico is about to experience its 'highest temperatures ever recorded' as death toll climbs"

The extreme heat smothering much of Mexico has killed dozens of people across multiple states

This is the result of delaying the building and installation of wind and sun, the new energy.

The dead are victims of that delay.

Victims

Its not just Mexico, or Brazil or Canada

@kevinrns This is how the global catastrophe proceeds: fires in one place, floods in another, unbearable temperatures elsewhere. All catastrophes which other countries may ignore until it hits them (and it will, it will).

Can we adjust the intensity of the world down a little bit? Thanks.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@deshipu Sadly, no, we can't. We'll struggle on trying to live our lives while the power-brokers commit atrocities at various levels until the end, which may be sooner than we think.

Your daily reminder while the UK papers are full of a very soggy Rishi (I'd say Riski but everything is such a foregone conclusion that no risk is involved). Anyway, the latest figures include a Red Crescent worker murdered while on duty. Healthcare workers are refusing to leave their patients until ambulances are provided. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/longform/2023/10/9/israel-hamas-war-in-maps-and-charts-live-tracker

Joe Biden, you disgust me. So does Hamas, which knew it was triggering a genocide against innocent Palestinians, but worst of all is the horrific and deliberate obstruction of vital supplies. That's genocide, and in spitting on the ICC's charge, the USA now supports systematic mass murder.

'The fact that people are choosing between medicine and rent is barbarism.

'The fact that people are worried about whether they will be on the streets every 4 weeks is barbarism.

The fact that every time a person has an ache or a pain, and they’re scared that it could either be a sore joint or cancer, but they can’t find out because they can’t afford the doctor? This is barbarism.'

From AOC''s latest emai. I still get them, though I can't donate from the UK. This woman should be President.

I sometimes thought my father thought he could't die while he still had books on his pending pile (a stab at immortality I seem to be replicating)... so, it was strangely touching to see Tom Gauld has had similar thoughts.

@bookstodon

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Agreed. One of the few things that worries me about death is the books I've long wanted to read and never got round to. Every time I encounter a masterpiece or a writer new to me who bowls me over - John McGahern being the latest - I think how lucky I am to have lived long enough to read them.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon And yet the books are immortal, isn't that a wonderful thing? And we can read the ones those who passed on left unread.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon On a related note, I read a couple of poems to my 93 year old mother each time I visit. She never was a reader, but startles me by quoting whole quatrains from her past. And yesterday's poems, one an absolute beauty by Louis MacNeice, were new to me, and she reacted vividly to them.

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@ericatty @ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon Surely the pesky ones would have gone to The Other Place?

davidpnice,
@davidpnice@mastodon.online avatar

@riggbeck @ChrisMayLA6 @ericatty @bookstodon Worth a bit of eye strain by holding the text up close. But I guess it's a metaphor. And no serious reader would welcome the end of the world...
