" Microsoft's blockbuster new feature will be the introduction of an AI-powered Windows Shell, enhanced with an “advanced Copilot,” that’s able to constantly work in the background to enhance search, jumpstart projects or workflows, understand context, and much more. Sources say these AI features will be “groundbreaking.”"

@Bot4Sale Oh, most certainly!

Yumquotient,

@ai6yr omg I’ve been keeping new 2022 Windows 11 Samsung Galaxy Book2 360 completely OFFline-hard to do since just RMS Winlink alone updates all the time. Haven’t been able to ascertain if rolling back to another Windows would solve this ai issue or Linux or?! (Mac household; loading Mac up w everything-but RTSystems lame, no VARA, no RMS…) Suggestions for OS on Galaxy Book2? New computer? Stick to Mac running Windows7 w Parallels?!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient I loaded my Linux laptop with Winlink on WINE, and it works fine in telnet mode, but haven't yet tried to get it to run with VARA. It's supposed to be possible, but I haven't had time to do it yet.

Yumquotient,

@ai6yr Thanks! Don’t remember which computer I’ve been successful w VARA. Setting up redundant ham apps on different computers- Mac Air running as much as possible w native apps; same Mac Air running Windows 7 (I know telnet works. Will retest VARA); then the GalaxyBook. I think on GalaxyBook VARA works great. Even w this redundancy, think my days are numbered. This ai garbage…

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient Oh yeah, certainly. I'd run only Linux if only the ham radio world would really go open source (rather than replicate the perils of commercial software with proprietary everything :-(

Yumquotient,

@ai6yr Mac would be such a no-brained for me. Making that work as much as I can.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr I achieved with fairly successful with on Manjaro in my fz-g1. It is my primary go to device for and related field work. It also works fine with and . Probably you could run RMS express too but pat is enough for my uses for now. If you need helo let me know.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@alper @Yumquotient Ooh, pat + VARA would be great. Quick recipe on how to get that to work?

Yumquotient,

@alper @ai6yr Thank you! RMS seems fine under Parallels. But I will retest and retest VARA too. I wonder if the GalaxyBook can run Manjaro… So many flavors of , prices all over the place. Will look at the and the that Ben refers to. Want something new enough to not have support issues (as in ham apps, not necessarily OS 😉)

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient @alper CF29 is a bit slow for running ham apps interactively (it's a Windows XP class machine)... Fine for running unattended stuff, however. Maybe look at the CF-30.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient I like fz-g1 as a general use machine and you can get it in USA market used as low as $80. If space and weight is premium I would also look for fz-m1. Still they both let you feel that a proper laptop form is superior sometimes. I would go for cf-20 as a lightweight hybrid laptop form if budget is not an issue.

I actually used this guide to the end for Vara on Linux. https://www.lastfrontierinbandera.com/index.php/2022/02/05/installing-winlink-and-vara-modems-on-ubuntu-20-04/

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@alper @Yumquotient Ooh, nice, the fz-g1 and fz-m1 look like a nice option! Will have to see how the touch screen works with Linux, but that looks like a better option for something like POTA/SOTA than a laptop.

Yumquotient,

@alper @ai6yr Very helpful. Having recently purchased what I thought would fix all my app compatibility/speed/weight/battery issues w the GalaxyBook, not sure if I’ll be “allowed” to spend much. Also ai6yr mentioned not all ham apps work in Linux ☹️ You’d think w all the hams out there, there’d be some Emcomms creating/porting to Linux/Ubuntu (anything other than Windows!) I also have found that I want to Do All The Things-even FT8, which earlier I saw no EMCOMM point to!

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr On manjaro/arch touch screen behaves better than ubuntu probably due to newer versions of software. It is quiet useful and even with gestures. Custom keys are not working out of the box and needs setup it is in Turkish but you can follow a similar setup from my guide. https://alperatmaca.com.tr/posts/cf-u1/

@Yumquotient @ai6yr As a semi volunteer SAR operator and comm personel there is nothing more that I hate than Windows. I cannot count how many times that failed on field. I don't see many vital software that is not available to gnu/linux and others can be run via wine. Best thing is, if you reach a satisfactionary point, just image the disk, keep it on a bootable drive and in the field if anything goes wrong just image it back and continue. Best redundancy one can get with computers on field!

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr Here how I roll normally with IC-706

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@alper @Yumquotient oooh! Nice!!!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@alper @Yumquotient That looks a lot more portable than my current setup. Though I don't use a PC much w/radio, that could be quite helpful to expand my ability to use different modes/etc.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient I mean to make a full gear out blog but still some things are rough. I received a very well used 20w solar from @sharinggoodmoments and plan to repair it and include the kit. All items there are powered by usb-pd including PC and Radio via usb-c pd negotiator chips they sell so cheap. Just cut adapter tip and solder the chip other end and you get selective voltage up to 20v and best part use off the shelf powerbanks as mobile battery. No more stupid battery cells!

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient Used this exact setup in recent Kahramanmaras earthquake and it performed well enough to get reliable connection to EU. While.we did not need to resort HF comms since sat uplinks we had were operational if I were there in the first 12h it could have relayed much needed first info. Sadly it wasn't the case. This bag without solar if operated conservatively can run up to 12h or more without any power and this state of radio systems amazes me still 🙂

Yumquotient,

@alper @ai6yr Have any of you found that you lose any functionality on the moving to (or maybe )? Touchscreen? Rotation? Whatever else it purports…? TIA

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient @alper So, having done this, touchscreen works great, so does rotation. You do lose Bluetooth, as there is no appropriate Bluetooth driver for whatever chip is being used in the FZG1 (very, very obscure HID device...), and I'm unsure if the mobile wireless card is supported or not (it exists and shows up, but I don't have a SIM to test it).

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient @alper The only major downsides to the platform I am running into is the single USB port, and battery life. I bought a cheap USB hub which seems to fix the issue, but the advantage of the Toughbooks (vs. the pad) is the many interface options (DVD, many USB ports, real DB9, etc.) However, the FZ-G1 being lesser known has a huge pricing advantage for projects, at least on eBay right now.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr I have 5th gen fz-g1 which has m2 style peripherals. Bluetooth and wifi works as usual. I had to make a physical fix for wifi because a motherboard malfunction but any time it is advisable to upgrade wifi chip to anything atheros based rather than broadcom vs. Screen rotation does not work with mine because I don't use wayland. On xorg screen keyboard works better. That is was my only reason. Special keys need custom config. I think windows is a burden and a powerhog.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@alper @Yumquotient I'd be curious to what Bluetooth chip is showing up on your machine. It suspect I can fix my Bluetooth issue by swapping out the Wi-Fi card for a combined Bluetooth/Wi-Fi card.

Yumquotient,

@alper @ai6yr Thank you, very helpful. I am looking at the MK4-it’s a lot less $ than the MK5, but think (hope!) the specs are good enough on the 4. I don’t like the word “hate”, but windows deserves it…and it’s getting worse. My problem is I’m running 2 proprietary apps that require it-which of course is not a very ham radio thing either! It’s why I think I’ll use w7 and not try to learn a completely new OS (Linux) which I know nothing about/ steep learning curve for me.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@Yumquotient @alper Loading up a machine with Linux (ubuntu or debian) is well worth it, and the learning curve is a lot less than you might imagine.
