I have been calling all week in different occasions on 14.107.5 but no success. Is everyone away or propagation sucks these days?

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@N4JAW I tried again just now. While I could hear USA-Switzerland exchange on the frequency, nobody answered my insistent CQs. Packed up and went home. Weird part is I can connect my usual winlink stations just fine, perhaps a little low snr. Where is everyone, it is saturday =')

Questions to enthusiasts:

I have a LG "gram" laptop, which has a 65W USB-C power-delivery power supply. It's also from LG, came with the laptop.

And when I insert this power supply, my radios (ICOM IC-7300 with extra power supply filter) starts to get a MUCH higher noise floor.

I tried a clip ferrite on the power-delivery USB cable, but didn't see a change.

Which of you OMs uses a USB-power-delivery power-supply where you know that it doesn't create radio interference?

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@holgerschurig I do use usb-pd chargers for charging and operations. I tried 3 different brand and type bricks and all create some sort of noise. Ferrite chokes reduces that a little but not much. I blamed switchmode regulators but the same thing doesn't happen when I connect my radio to a usb-pd powerbank seperated from AC. I came this far. Hope it helps 🙂

Last week's @RATPAC panel had several memorable quotes that I really hope we follow up on.

The one about professional emergency services people avoiding people and actively discouraging incorporation of hams into plans was hard to hear.

There was a strong consensus that the way forward was "more training" and "appear professional". A quote was "don't show up (to volunteer) dressed like you live under a bridge".

I got my ideas together about this and wrote the following post. It was waay over due and I am glad that I have these in words now (=

dostlar, yardım lazım :)

@cengizispir @alper

I have a question for my fellow . I have this account @verdantsquare I don't follow them, no one whom I follow boost them and we don't share the server yet their posts are appearing on my home timeline somewhat consistently. Not that I am displeased to see but the appearance of their posts goes against my current understanding of how mastodon posts propagates. Anyone have an idea?

In these dark days, only joy that I have left is finding good weather to go to forest. Take tea, some sweets and trusty receiver to the shit out of the forest. is just an excuse to be more active and have a reason for it. Discovered unknown parts of the forest and also let other people to do the same. Great...

A wood picnic bench overseeing a lake in a forest shere a tablet some bakery abd a vacuum bottle standing on it under the sun.

@Yumquotient @ai6yr I achieved with fairly successful with on Manjaro in my fz-g1. It is my primary go to device for and related field work. It also works fine with and . Probably you could run RMS express too but pat is enough for my uses for now. If you need helo let me know.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient I like fz-g1 as a general use machine and you can get it in USA market used as low as $80. If space and weight is premium I would also look for fz-m1. Still they both let you feel that a proper laptop form is superior sometimes. I would go for cf-20 as a lightweight hybrid laptop form if budget is not an issue.

I actually used this guide to the end for Vara on Linux. https://www.lastfrontierinbandera.com/index.php/2022/02/05/installing-winlink-and-vara-modems-on-ubuntu-20-04/

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr On manjaro/arch touch screen behaves better than ubuntu probably due to newer versions of software. It is quiet useful and even with gestures. Custom keys are not working out of the box and needs setup it is in Turkish but you can follow a similar setup from my guide. https://alperatmaca.com.tr/posts/cf-u1/

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr As a semi volunteer SAR operator and comm personel there is nothing more that I hate than Windows. I cannot count how many times that failed on field. I don't see many vital software that is not available to gnu/linux and others can be run via wine. Best thing is, if you reach a satisfactionary point, just image the disk, keep it on a bootable drive and in the field if anything goes wrong just image it back and continue. Best redundancy one can get with computers on field!

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr Here how I roll normally with IC-706

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient I mean to make a full gear out blog but still some things are rough. I received a very well used 20w solar from @sharinggoodmoments and plan to repair it and include the kit. All items there are powered by usb-pd including PC and Radio via usb-c pd negotiator chips they sell so cheap. Just cut adapter tip and solder the chip other end and you get selective voltage up to 20v and best part use off the shelf powerbanks as mobile battery. No more stupid battery cells!

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @Yumquotient Used this exact setup in recent Kahramanmaras earthquake and it performed well enough to get reliable connection to EU. While.we did not need to resort HF comms since sat uplinks we had were operational if I were there in the first 12h it could have relayed much needed first info. Sadly it wasn't the case. This bag without solar if operated conservatively can run up to 12h or more without any power and this state of radio systems amazes me still 🙂

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@Yumquotient @ai6yr I have 5th gen fz-g1 which has m2 style peripherals. Bluetooth and wifi works as usual. I had to make a physical fix for wifi because a motherboard malfunction but any time it is advisable to upgrade wifi chip to anything atheros based rather than broadcom vs. Screen rotation does not work with mine because I don't use wayland. On xorg screen keyboard works better. That is was my only reason. Special keys need custom config. I think windows is a burden and a powerhog.

Hey lovely folk of , I am planing to make a field portable / for maybe up to 20 meter. I am considering several design choices and came by with the idea of vertical moxons hung from fishing poles. I wonder how this would compare to horizontal and higher hung . Interwebs gave me no answer. I aim to make it simple and compact and vertical idea is good for that goal but I want this to be my efficient antenna so... Any ideas?

Nothing is wrong, and it's no emergency, but I'm curious if anybody in my Fediverse circle is in a place to offer Owncast some legal advice.

Alternatively, can anybody recommend any online options that work on an open source budget that would be able to answer specific questions on an as-needed basis?

I'm in the US (California) and Owncast is... on the internet? Nowhere? Everywhere? I don't know.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@gabek I might be provide some assistance for Roman Law but if it is Common law then, @neil

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@gabek @neil If your instance and/or users are from UK, US and common wealth countries you most likely need help from a Common Law pro. If otherwise it is most likely Roman Law and what you might be need assistance with.

@N4JAW It appears we have similar choice of computer. What OS do you run on that? How does it perform on the field? I haven't time to set it up for ham use yet.

alper,
@alper@mas.to avatar

@N4JAW I installed Linux on it and it increased my run time. It runs cooler and most of the time without fan running. But I suffered a little bit touch capacity such as palm rejection. Thanks for the input 👍

alper,

@N4JAW I used to have this cutie before fz-g1 but too underpowered for the task. Still a physical keyboard was outstanding.
