Just realized it isn't S3 storage what I potentially need for the #Peertube instance I might want to host but that other service thingy for improved bandwidth. 🙃
@kkarhan@rodirik Well, I would look at Ceph if Peertube would support that. They don't though (is it even usable for webservices in the same fashion as S3?).
@kkarhan@Natanox We use Minio for #MastodonDE because its more flexible than storing the Media Files inside the Mastodon folder Structure. So like if we want to move the Instance we can move Mastodon and the big Media Storage (aprox. 160-200 GB) Separately without the hastle of complex nginx configurations. And other things on top of that are also easier to implement, throwing a CDN on it for example.
@Natanox@kkarhan You can tweak the storage usage, but we don't need to. It is always a balance between storage usage and user performance, because if you delete old media, the server has to re-download it from the original instance when the user visits older posts. so the user has to wait for that to happen.
@kkarhan@rodirik You can also get a dedicated server with multiple terabytes of RAID1 storage for around 50€ (or even less if its solely for data). Depending on your scalability model this might be a good alternative. Also that means you could use stuff like Ceph which you obviously seem to prefer. 😉
@kkarhan@KatS@rodirik I mean, if you get paid properly and the hardware is for a good purpose it's not a bad thing. One could argue they trust you.
Unfortunately we all know the hardware is only used for profit bullshit unless you work in either public service or for a non-profit or charity org, and neither does anyone trust anyone else since we live in a "humans-are-selfish" competition nightmare.
