Has anyone built a tool that maps which #fediverse instances* federate with which —something to visualize who’s federating (or not federating) with whom?
bc that would be an awesomely useful resource when picking a new community to join/migrate to

@LLS Probably less interesting than one might think? There is a wide selection of known-to-be-unacceptable instances starting with Gab and Pawoo and various nazi/incel clusters, that the vast majority of instances have de-federated. There are a few instances, e.g. mastodon.art, that are much more aggressive about defederating. Then there's the question of Threads-or-not. I guess this amounts to the thousand of instances sorting into a small number of buckets.
@LLS I think this should technically be possible for the subset of servers that expose their blocks? It’s an interesting question. Would totally be fraught, but what isn’t.
@kissane@LLS For the servers that don't publish block lists, would it be feasible to ping them from one account each from a list of known servers to at least build a partial connection web?
Realistically tho? My immediate concern is someone loudly asserting that compiling this info or publishing any confirmation of what servers do or don't federate with each other constitutes a "privacy violation" and trying to get the whole project shut down on those grounds.
