What desktop distribution do you use on a modern laptop?

My venerable laptop is 10 years old and it's battery isn't what it is so I've a new one on it's way.

Now I've used Ubuntu and Mint over the years for desktop use, alternating between the two.

As this one currently has Ubuntu on it I'll probably try the current Mint but what other distributions are people using for daily Desktop/Laptop use?

@peter Try Linux Mint, but then the XFCE edition ;)

@peter I use OpenSUSE MicroOS on one, and Fedora Silverblue on the other.

@jcrabapple @peter How do they compare in your experience?

@Sequester7238 for what I do they're essentially the same

@peter

Biorez,

@peter I'm curious, what made you alternate between mint and ubuntu?

@Biorez originally WiFi.

At one point I had Ubuntu on a laptop but couldn't get WiFi working. When I tried Mint it just worked.

On the next machine I tried Ubuntu again and that worked fine, so over the years I've just tried each one in turn to see how they compared.

This specific laptop's now 10 years old but I've rebuilt it many times over the years & again alternated between them - right now it's Ubuntu.

This time I'm wondering if to try something else first for a change

Bashingom,

@peter @Biorez
I have ran Xubuntu (minimal install) on old old hardware here - with absolutely no heart burn.

cheers

CaptMikeYates,

@peter My SL510 Thinkpad is going to my Mum next week and has Mint Linux on it.

@peter I like using on my laptops. I'll admit they're both older laptops, though. If I had to try on a new laptop I'd go for openSUSE Tumbleweed.

@peter I always use openSuse on my Thinkpads (indeed some 10y old) Tumbleweed on some, but Leap on most, it's always just felt the right setup for me. (always found KDE to be my environment, and opensuse seemed better configured for KDE)
Although I did have a dalliance with LFS for many years until life took over and I didn't have enough hours in the day. 😄

@peter I’ve always found Ubuntu does everything I need. I mostly use the Server version (on several old iMacs!) but Desktop works well.

mos_8502,

@peter Debian. For best performance, use the XFS filesystem.

gpowerf,

@peter Pop!_OS, Ubuntu, and Debian are my choices.

ljmc,

@peter I use fedora everywhere these days. But a while ago I used alpine on an Atom z8350 based laptop, it was an interesting experience.

jgsjames,

@peter I've Kubuntu on a 1st gen Microsoft Surface Laptop and Ubuntu on a 5th gen Surface tablet. Aside from the camera all works well.

@jgsjames yeah, the camera I'm not worried about - can't remember ever using the one on the old laptop
