The booksellers at #HalfPriceBooks achieved union recognition in Jan 2022, but their employer won't give them a contract. That's a scummy way for a "family business" to treat hardworking booksellers, who are seeking a living wage - and are being offered a real-terms pay cut instead. Booksellers can't live on love of literature - they need to pay rent, buy groceries and support their families. Half Price, give HPB Workers Unite the contract they deserve!
@pluralistic I worked at HPB in the mid-'00s and it breaks my heart to hear how bad things have gotten under the founders' heirs. The hourly pay was pretty sad but breaks and benefits were great, and it sounds like especially the benefits have been stripped dramatically. They have every reason to unionize.
This is sad. I was a big customer of #HalfPriceBooks from the 80s and 90s until I moved away from their area of business. A wonderful place to shop for a book loving constantly broke kid.
One thing I've learned is that if you want happy customers you have to begin with a happy work force.
@pluralistic Ugh! I've been a customer of Half Price Books for literally decades now. It's disgusting to learn that the company is just as bad as all the others out there.
