Got an email this morning from Canada Post informing me that a package had been delivered. The email did not explain what the package was, nor who it was from. Nor did the email explain to what address the package had been delivered. So I guess, the takeaway is, there's a package. Maybe you should check outside in case it's yours.

@mcc I can say with certainty that it was not mine.

Mostly because I don't think Pittsburgh has been annexed by Ontario yet

@pmzeitler give it time

@mcc i know that you're savvy AF but over last xmas period i got a ton of scam versions of similar messages. General result of opening various nefarious links over tor in a "jailed" browser would eventually lead me to "pay small fee to release package"..

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@snosrapkungfu This is a good point but they're definitely pointing at the legit canada post website. I think I know what address it was delivered to so I guess I'm going for a walk

adron,
@adron@metalhead.club avatar

@mcc I've started noticing one can get into the middle of the delivery chain communications and they're all obfuscated like this. If the initial comms message isn't received one has no idea WTF they're delivering... I've been thoroughly perplexed trying to figure out the linked list chains that they seem to be.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

I'm being a little bit "sardonic" here. The email did in fact have a "Track for updates" button which provided the further information that the message was sent from "Mississauga" (that's the area just west of Toronto) and that it was delivered to "Toronto". So in fact I know where my* package is: It is in Toronto. If you are not in Toronto, you probably don't have my package

  • Assuming it's mine; it's not totally clear

@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Update: I was just about to step out the door to walk to my PO box and figure out if the mystery package went there BUT then I received a second email, from a Quebecois courier service I've never heard of, saying my package was on the way and will be received within 3 hours. This opens a new possibility: Maybe when Canada Post emailed me to tell me they delivered the package, they actually meant they delivered it to the Quebecois courier service, who will deliver it to me or my PO box.

@mcc Tell me it's not Intelcom.

@mcc what's a little breaking the laws of causality between friends and postpeople.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

This is all very confusing, which means I think I know who the package is from: It's from AliExpress, who are the only people I order materials from whose delivery system is based entirely on riddles. Unfortunately this PROBABLY means that there will be import duties due on the package, meaning the courier service will show up at my PO box, ask for payment, and no one will be able to provide it. I tried calling the courier and asking if there is COD required. They said they don't know.

I apologize for probably giving you (you, the Mastodon reader) more information than you need here, given we have now established that this package, whatever it is, is not going to you

@mcc is this your new action figure?

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@jollysea Literally yes I think it is my new action figure. I'm really curious what action figure it's supposed to be. It's supposed to be a Colorlight i9 FPGA board

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@jollysea Last time when I got the Trunks I had ordered a Colorlight i5, so it stands to reason if I order an i9 I should get a different action figure

jollysea,
@jollysea@chaos.social avatar

@mcc keeping my fingers crossed for Vegeta or Piccolo!

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@jollysea I think I mentioned this in a previous thread, but if it's Spider-Gwen I'm just going to keep it

@mcc You never know the couriers could just be delivering it to the airport to send it to Ireland.

@mcc No apology necessary, still laughing.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Okay!! The Canada Post package was real, it DID go to my PO box, and it WAS my AliExpress package. Which raises another, baffling question: What is the still-incoming package from the courier?! https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111138147221927173

¯(°_o)/¯

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@fishidwardrobe Why did they have to send me an email just to say they were sending me oatmeal by courier !!

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@mcc Why did they send you oatmeal by courier? Why did they send you oatmeal?

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@fishidwardrobe Well, I'm going to make a confession here. I did order some oatmeal. They didn't have the brand I like at the grocery. I just wasn't expecting either that it would be sent by courier, or that it would be a big secret what it was or where it was coming from

fishidwardrobe,
@fishidwardrobe@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@mcc Aha!! But, yes. I wonder what the courier thought of that

lahosken,
@lahosken@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc @fishidwardrobe "I just wasn't expecting either that it would be sent by courier," Seems appropriate for instant or "one minute" oatmeal, but not for regular.

    Further updates: I woke up this morning to an email, sent while I was sleeping, from AliExpress saying that my i9 "has arrived at the local delivery center" and that they will "keep [me] updated on the next steps". I am holding the i9 in my hands right now. This probably means miscommunication and not that AliExpress sent me two i9s, but nothing would surprise me at this point. In unrelated news, I still don't have my oatmeal

    ruojake,
    @ruojake@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

    @mcc Reminds me of when I recently ordered a set of five soft and silent wheels for my office chair at home. The package arrived by mail at one morning, and around lunchtime I got a phone call. It was someone from a postal logistics center or whatever, apologizing that my packages (plural!) were still at their premises and would be delivered to me later that day. Now I have ten very nice office chair wheels that I don't know what to do with.

    @mcc sometime when I get a package with duty to pay, I get an email with a link to pay it online, for cheaper than in person and if I do, they put it in my mailbox. The form behind the link only work after the package is processed at the duty office and before the delivery person show up the first time.
    Sometimes I don't get the email. Sometimes I get it two day after I go to the post office to get the package. Usually, I can check the form and it work before I get the link
