"The [researchers] say the “report reveals how these East Coast opponents are not solely local – they are embedded in a network of seasoned interests and think tanks that have perfected obstruction tactics for decades.”

One striking aspect of the anti-OSW network is the sharing of tactics and rhetoric, both in mainstream media and on social networks, said Slevin."

You'll hear a lot about whale deaths. But

"Experts say there’s no evidence that limited wind farm construction on the Atlantic Coast has directly resulted in any whale deaths, despite politically motivated statements suggesting a link.

[There are no whale deaths around older European wind farms, either]

The biggest threats [to whales] are shipping collisions and entanglement in fishing gear. Underwater noise pollution is another concern, they say."

Delay is the new

"[Outright climate denial] is explicitly banned from generating ad revenue on according to Google's policy.

Instead, the report found that last year 70% of content on the channels analyzed focused on attacking climate solutions as unworkable, portraying global warming as harmless or beneficial, or casting climate science and the environmental movement as unreliable. That's up from 35% five years earlier."

How ’s climate deniers turned into climate doomers

“What it is doing is creating a cohort of people who believe is happening, but believe there’s no hope,”

The report lists as prominent sources of lies about climate change on YouTube:
Libertarian think tank The Heartland Institute;
media company BlazeTV, created by the former Fox News host Glenn Beck;
PragerU, not a university but a right-wing media outlet known for spreading disinformation.

@CelloMomOnCars What climate denial and climate doom have in common is that they are both excuses for inaction.

Knowledge is power: tell your friends to watch out for this.
Delay is the new climate denial.

Thanks to @kateyoder, who writes insightful pieces that connect the dots.

"Together, the YouTube channels that the center focused on garnered 3.4 billion views last year. And all those views means there’s money involved: The report found that YouTube is potentially making up to $13.4 million a year in ad revenue from channels that post climate denial."

This driven Dementor campaign is not helping people already struggling with mental health, especially the young. It may help if you point out to them that part of the bleak view on climate they get online is manufactured.

" “New denial” content — attacks on solutions, the science and the climate movement — now makes up 70% of all claims posted on , according to the report, up from 35% in 2018. "

denial still thrives online on all platforms

"After years of building robust content moderation systems, social media companies facing political pressure and economic headwinds have pulled back on gatekeeping, part of an industry trend that some fear could roll back safeguards that clamp down on misinformation."

Saudi Aramco CEO's is calculated to make you lose hope.

While emissions are falling in major economies, he claims that the energy transition is "failing".

While clean energy is booming, he says we should give up on giving up oil and gas and just be depressed.

But he's right on one thing: The fate of the planet hinges on how developing countries get their energy. They need clean energy financing, pronto. Or the dirty energy peeps will get there first.

Fear and loathing at CERA week:

At oil and gas industry gathering, executives pretend the clean energy transition is not happening, or not happening very fast, or anyway that the world will surely still need oil and gas for a long time. In an act of projection, they still talk of the climate "debate" and call it "emotional".

But that clean energy horse is out of the barn (and they didn't get on it).

How doublethink kills climate action

"Strine argues [doublethink] is needed to trust anti-ESG Republicans who insist business leaders should focus on profits, not politics, when they themselves are “among the most well-fed pigs at the corporate political spending trough”.

Strine accuses anti-ESG politicians who downplay the urgency of climate action of another Orwellian sin: ignoring science and objective fact in order to keep a grip on power."

Strine's paper is open access

Orwell "envisioned a world where political elites had lost any genuine belief in a cause larger than themselves, and where “Power is not a means; it is an end.”

In pursuing power, these elites manipulated language and the very concept of truth so that their followers would happily embrace any portrayal of reality as a matter of identification with their chosen Party, even while recognizing that the portrayal was objectively untrue."
