IF you want a flight ban that's MEANINGFUL, do this

  • 4 hours by train, not 2.5 hours

  • apply to ALL flights, inc. transfers and private jets

  • turn connecting flights into connecting trains with guaranteed passenger rights in case of delay

Anything LESS than that and it's gesture politics

@jon also, make sure your airports have train stations with long distance through service

@jon and then build the train connections!

Including the connections to the Balkan states. It is a shame that e.g. a train ride from Zagreb to Vienna (roughly 400 km between two European capitals) takes 8+ hrs.

@gudroot Indeed. Absolutely. Although if you look at France's ban - you could easily ban a lot more because the rail network is quite fast, but they have not.

@jon It’s a foot in the door and gets the idea in people’s heads which allows for increases in the future. No, it’s not enough, but dismissing first steps as just gestures is silly and shits on the people who worked hard to make it reality.

@WhiteCatTamer @jon Two problems with "first steps":

  • Even ineffective steps will be hated by opponents of environmental regulation. And can be exploited to create a backlash. If you risk negative press anyway, at least do something effective.
  • You need society to invest in alternatives. How can you do this when affecting no one? Why would airlines invest in ticketing systems that allow connecting intercontinental flights with trains, if it's of marginal necessity for their main business.

@odoruhako @WhiteCatTamer @jon https://www.lufthansa.com/gb/en/lufthansa-express-rail DB and Lufthansa have been unusual in this respect for ages (I’ve used their through-ticketing and it worked pretty well although it was some time ago)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@wlukewindsor Yes. And this Lufthansa arrangement saves more CO2 each year than France's “ban” @odoruhako @WhiteCatTamer

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer No. What was done in France was to engineer it deliberately to be ineffective. Knowing few people would look at the details.

tomtom,
