So, I thought I was 100% literate in Canadian but today I learned a new word…

Duotang. ⁉️

This is not an April fools joke, I promise lol

Like what even? How?! Whyyyyyy.

(To clarify, I’m American and went to school in Georgia)

@britt When I moved here from California as a kid, I just accepted it. I was a little confused but kiddo me just rolled with it.

Personally, they’re way better than binders. I remember getting my finger caught on the rings when I had to clasp them closed.

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@richygarcia84 totally agree!! fun story :)

@britt

I've only ever heard of Wu-Tang, so I’m lost too :)

tophee,
@tophee@hachyderm.io avatar

@britt (tosses on the Canadian accent) Oh yeah bud, can’t forget your duotangs!

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@tophee I can hear it! Haha

I have started using the “yeah, bud” phrase and I admit it’s one of my favs.

@rayk@techhub.social avatar

@britt I don't think that's just a Canadian thing. I remember having those growing up in Michigan in the 70s and 80s.

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@rayk A few folks commented re: Michigan. Close to Canada, so I assume the slang could cross over.

I grew up in Georgia and never heard it until well, recently. :)

I love when that happens!

Dunstable,
@Dunstable@mstdn.ca avatar

@britt I take it you didn't go to school in Ontario? It's very common here

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@Dunstable I’m American, so definitely not lol. I’ve been here a while though and spent my University years here… yet… never heard the word.

@britt

I used Duo-Tang folders all the time in school growing up in Michigan.

@britt I thought that Duotangs were still pretty common. Hmm, interesting. I used them in school in the 70s and 80s, and I think my kids even used them in the 00's (maybe not?)?

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@Diggler67 so sorry, I should clarify… I’m American, so I’d not heard that word yet in my 12+ years in Canada. :)

stephanie,
@stephanie@ottawa.place avatar

@britt that's what I grew up with in Québec! It was even the name used in the school list!

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@stephanie such a unique name! Haha it’s got me laughing.

Quatar,
@Quatar@mstdn.games avatar

@britt because they have 2 tangs that you fold out to hold the paper in

McRocker,
@McRocker@mstdn.ca avatar

@britt Had them in the 70s...not to worry. Often used as report covers that were heavy paper on the outside with metal fasteners inside with perfectly placed holes to enclose your foolscap paper essay or project.
...duotang

LinuxAndYarn,
@LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social avatar

@McRocker @britt I just knew them as a brand name of report cover, which is all we called them in Philly (though my dad would say "jacket" instead of "cover", and I blame his time in the Coast Guard for that).

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@McRocker I should edit and clarify my post, I know what they are and used them in school… but I just didn’t know that’s what Canadians call them. :) I’m from the U.S. originally.

McRocker,
@McRocker@mstdn.ca avatar

@britt OK...what did you call them? Serious Q.

britt,
@britt@mstdn.games avatar

@McRocker erm… pocket folders, prong folder? we were apparently very boring. 😆

stitchedpixels,
@stitchedpixels@mstdn.games avatar

@britt Can confirm, the duotang is real. No idea why we use that name, probably a brand name?
