It was the first language covering at least 70% of the land the Unions countries currently consist of and it woul be fair for everyone to learn it. OK. Italians, Roumanians, French, Spanisch, and Portuguese would have an advantage.

Of course it helped a lot to learn the other western European languages except the Galic ones. And I know: The closer you are with your mother tongue to the language you want to lear, the harder it is. So, as I'm fluent in Argentinian Spanisch, I hardly can talk in Italian even if I understand it.

It already has developed orderly grammar to many languages - German as well. I think you will have fun to learn German.

I had 7 years of Latin, and I hated it.

Of course, it wasn't all in vain, and I learned something, but the "value for money" is abysmal.

I had it from 5th to 11th class. The teacher tried to get me for a Latin Intense course as main subject, but I refused. I didn't want to talk and learn about Horaz, Vergil, Ovid and other kind of this literature stuff. But I liked to read Caesar, Cato, Tacitus and Cicero.

I wish I'd have taken Latin, it would have made botany and natural sciences that much easier in a lot of ways, but I'm actually dipping into this conversation because I just noticed Caesar mentioned.
