The EU is abandoning its Mastodon project.

I had thought the main way Mastodon could develop into a major social media was by attracting bodies who want to respect EU law and similar regulation. If even the EU institutions themselves don't prioritise it, then that's another nail in the coffin.

@xinit They're ending their server and don't seem to have another option they can announce. People have asked them if this means they will migrate to Threads and they've not responded.

@Loukas Parece que ya comenzaron los recortes de dinero público dirigidos a asuntos sociales, para destinarlo a la máquina de la guerra.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@SecoasecasMouse it's a shame they don't see how Fediverse is a vital part of defending democracy.

martenbjorklund,
@martenbjorklund@mastodon.nu avatar

@Loukas Every EU-representative receives €5000 per month for “office-material”…

If we had €5000 per month, .nu would be able to host millions of users, completely adfree and without collecting any data but what is needed to create an account (=e-mail).

wthinker,

@martenbjorklund @Loukas For €5000 a month can give each new user a small chocolate...

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@wthinker @martenbjorklund Belgian chocolate

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@martenbjorklund The Pirate Party and others should fund an EU data cooperative to take over the server or something.

@Loukas Was it because I called von der Leyen "Frau Genocide"??

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@kAlvaro Yes they specifically mentioned you in the statement and say you're a dumb dumb poopy head.

@Loukas @marlies I'm confused, the whole article is about what a success it's been, but they're closing it??

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@thisismissem @marlies it's the same way a university will say 'we are investing in humanities and creating a new department' [that combines the ruins of five other departments which we have cut]

Everything is phrased in a positive way as misdirection.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@thisismissem @marlies as a journalist one of the most frustrating things about reporting on EU is how it uses this kind of sugary gaslighting non-stop so much of what it publishes for journalists and the public is just junk.

delawen,
@delawen@floss.social avatar

@Loukas This was such a success we doubled the initial time. And it is such a success we stop now.

Someone please explain. Why close it if it is a success?

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@delawen I'm guessing that they doubled the time because the people involved are enthusiastic and cared and argued for it to continue and promised to work extra on it. Then the next year management was looking for things to cut and the enthusiasts lost the argument. But EU always has to say everything is a 'success' because they want to avoid bad publicity.

@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@Loukas "especially considering the limited resources at our disposal. Unfortunately, despite our efforts to find a new home for EU Voice and EU Video in other EUIs, we have been unable to secure new ownership to maintain the servers"

Seems to be nothing more than a funding issue though.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@troed politics is about priorities and they've decided Mastodon isn't one.

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@Loukas Most often something like this is a not a political decision but a department not getting funds. I've asked a friend who works for one of the groups in the parliament, let's see if he can dig something out.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@troed all i can say to that is to repeat my previous comment

pteranodo,
@pteranodo@mastodon.social avatar

@Loukas is it this Whole thing of, “Whoa, that’s an entirely different SERVER( /INSTANCE) , why the heck would you want to communicate with them, or even be allowed to see those folllowing them??”

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@pteranodo For the EU decision I'm guessing that the people arguing for the project just lost to other EU people who were saying they need to be on bigger platforms instead.

shuro,

@Loukas Likely it is for the best.

Governments are the last thing we need on here.

Corporations are the second last thing :)

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@shuro I would rather not have to hope for support from governments :) but Mastodon's respect for integrity and rule of law was the main attraction it had. There's no grassroots move to make up for the lack of institutions.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

This doesn't mean Mastodon can't still grow in this way - for example if other institutions see it as important - but so far I don't see that happening, and developments are going backwards.

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@Loukas We fucked up some golden opportunities.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@alexanderhay What would you have done differently?

alexanderhay,
@alexanderhay@mastodon.social avatar

@Loukas I've been pretty irritable about all the nonsense for a while - the scolds driving off new users, the clunky interface, the sanctimony... Some of these are systemic and may not be easily fixed, if at all. (And then there is the Quote Toots hot potato.) But a lot of it is cultural. The userbase here isn't as vile or as psychotic as the Birdsite's, but it is aloof, arrogant and blinkered.

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@alexanderhay Yes, I think you're right. It's fundamentally a cultural problem. That also means it won't change unless there's suddenly a new huge migration. So any small growth will face the same barrage of scolding and get damped.

anarchic_teapot,
@anarchic_teapot@lingo.lol avatar

@Loukas What gets me is that posting to Mastodon doesn't even require huge effort on their part. Many of us on Mastodon alone are here for a reason. We lose out if the institutions fuck off to commercially-run platforms (which abuse our personal data)

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@anarchic_teapot staff costs are always the biggest cost for any institution, so if they had to budget staff hours for the project it could look like a 'lot'. I mean a few thousand euros. And that shows me they don't care that much.

anarchic_teapot,
@anarchic_teapot@lingo.lol avatar

@Loukas I agree. Post to several other SM but not Mastodon? Do they think we don't know about the tools that allow automatic cross-posting to different sites?

Loukas,
@Loukas@mastodon.nu avatar

@anarchic_teapot well the important thing is interacting and taking responsibility for their mentions not just an auto feed. But it keeps coming back to priorities. If they think rule of law and integrity rights are actually important they should quit Twitter and Facebook if that's what's needed to maintain a Mastodon presence. If even the guardians of rules don't prioritise them why should they expect others to do so.

Anyway it's all very predictable but still shameful:)
