The EU is abandoning its Mastodon project.

I had thought the main way Mastodon could develop into a major social media was by attracting bodies who want to respect EU law and similar regulation. If even the EU institutions themselves don't prioritise it, then that's another nail in the coffin.

"Dune," "Foundation" and "The Three Body Problem" were all supposedly unfilmable, and yet here we are. With that in mind, the A.V. Club's William Hughes writes about other sci-fi novels that deserve their shot at the big screen, including "The Caves Of Steel" by Isaac Asimov and Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Left Hand Of Darkness." Tell us in the comments which classic science-fiction stories you'd love to see on film or TV — and if there are any existing adaptations you think shouldn't have been made.

delawen,
@delawen@floss.social avatar

@CultureDesk I wouldn't say #Foundation has been adapted to the screen. Maybe because it is really hard to do it, no one has been able to, yet.

Whatever they are filming under the trademark Foundation is vaguely inspired by it and may contain traces of Asimov's books, if any.

But it is not the original story. That would require changing all actors each season, for starters. And that's not something viewers like.

Depends.

The newer series do fan service referencing old series so you may miss jokes and references. Anyway, Strange New Worlds would be a good starting point. It doesn't matter if you miss references to enjoy it.

Older series "require" less previous knowledge because there is less lore to base them on. But sometimes the stories... didn't age well. Most of the episodes did, but for example the 1st season of TNG can be hard to watch for younger people.

delawen,
@delawen@floss.social avatar

@EmiliaTheHero @photonic_sorcerer

But wasn't Star Trek a breaking barriers and frontiers state of the art revolutionary series?

Yes, it is. It has been and still is.

And still, you can watch The Original Series with an interracial kiss in one episode and light raping jokes in another episode. I mean... they were done by people of their time. Revolutionaries, but grown then.

And early TNG reused old TOS scripts. You can smell them.

The same way a 200 year old Vulcan would look at a 20 year old human as an immature kid. Hell, I look at a 20 year old human as immature and I'm just in my thirties!

Biological maturity does not equal getting the life experience of an adult. Not enough life experience means more naive and easier to manipulate, even if the older being doesn't want to.

I guess I am a bit weird. But when you get solar electricity effectively for free, can use it yourself at home, maybe even store it in batteries — didn't you already get enough? Why all this fuss about selling the excess electricity? Just give it away to your neighbours, for free. Whatever gets used locally, reduces the problems on the grid, which is often used an excuse by Big Electricity to refuse to buy solar electricity. 1/n

delawen,
@delawen@floss.social avatar

@jwildeboer

My electricity provider is a cooperative. All the excess I don't use goes to finance things like making collective solar panel installations cheaper or helping people without money install solar panels and reduce their electricity bill.

Something I've always wondered is, assuming a hypothetical perfect communist system, what would the standard of living look like? I've seen people try to make arguments based on taking the GDP/GNP then dividing it by the population, which works out at about $70k per person. But then they're picturing that within a current system of artificially constrained housing supply, for profit healthcare/education, and 10x price markups. Assuming a perfectly efficient system in which the only costs are resources + time, and 90% of society's labor isn't going to sustaining completely useless overhead, what does the average lifestyle look like?

delawen,
@delawen@floss.social avatar

@malwaretech not a really good example because it is a dictatorship and not really a fair community, but...

Consider Cuba's healthcare which is very very advanced in prevention health care, leading health care in several "not profitable" health issues.

That's how it would be: focus on making sure all the basics are covered (no homelessness or hunger). Regular health checkups detecting issues early to fix them.

We already have resources for a good live for everyone. We just need to split them.

I have no idea how far you are on the transition and how far you want to/can go. But if you feel inadequate, know that there are plenty of sapphic women out there that won't mind your passing.

If you truly have a hard time, maybe the bisexual community will be more welcoming for you? Not that they will see you as a man, but that they are used to be attracted to more masculine features, no need to be perfect passing (as if that existed) to get our interest.

I'm tired of the "Lean In" narrative. I have no problem grabbing a chair and sitting on any table. Speaking even if it is never my turn. Making sure my voice is heard.

The problem is not knowing where the table is.

Or even worse: when they make up fake tables for you to sit on them thinking you finally have your voice heard... only to discover the real table is in some man-cave hidden from you. A table that turns invisible if you dare look at it. And everybody denies its existence.

@gersh @Brendanjones there has been incentives to install solar powered cells at home for several years already. This is not a one year effort.

Not sure about other countries, but I think it was similar: During the pandemic lockdown in Spain we had a big increase in solar power installations (thanks to public monetary help and people being able to save money also thanks to government helping in maintaining salaries and jobs) and that didn't diminish during the following years.

We just want to quickly say how great we think Mastodon is. We experience an inclusive community culture here and believe that you are building a piece of utopia here.

We are aware that some creators have made different experiences and don't gain followers at all. We consider ourselves lucky to have been part of the first wave when Mastodon hit the media.

This place needs to be a counterpart to X and all the toxic corners that exist on the internet. Please preserve it and stay kind.

@warandpeas The algorithm here is just that if people think you are awesome, they boost you so other people see you.

If people find you randomly in their following boosts and like you, they may boost you or follow you for more content.

As long as you generate good content and be respectful and a good person, you will grow.

So I left Twitter for Mastodon, and I’m happy with the switch.
Selecting a Mastodon instance seems to only make a small difference in the experience, unless you spend a lot of time on the “Local” timeline, which I typically don’t. Reliability and moderation rules seems to be the main deciding factors.

So, enter the … lemmy vs. kbin seems to be which software you like better (I have not been able to tell much of a difference). But choosing an instance? Does it make ANY difference besides reliability? Can someone explain it like I’m five? Is moderation done at the magazine (or community) level, rather than the instance level, like Mastodon? kbin seems bigger at this point, but Lemmy seems a more blatant copy of Reddit (which I don’t mind). Can they see each other’s content? There has to be a web page explaining this, right?
