Our commitment to the fediverse is here to stay.

Today, we launched our new Mastodon instance. It will ensure a privacy-focused space to engage with and get the latest from our Commissioners, departments, and the official voices of the Commission.

We want to thank @Mastodon for stewarding us and helping us make this possible.

Fostering European digital players is vital to our strategy for a stronger .

This is a unique opportunity to grow the community even more. Let's get there!

@EUCommission

So instead of a general EU instance at "social.network.europa.eu" there's now a single instance for the European Commission only at "ec.social-network.europa.eu"?

I'm happy that you're still here, but wow that seems like a waste of resources. Running the instance for the EC only is no more work than running one at one level higher for all of the EU institutions :(

The EU is abandoning its Mastodon project.

I had thought the main way Mastodon could develop into a major social media was by attracting bodies who want to respect EU law and similar regulation. If even the EU institutions themselves don't prioritise it, then that's another nail in the coffin.

Happened to see this just now. Tell me why this is wrong.

Conventional wisdom holds that a negotiated end to the Ukraine war is neither possible nor desirable. This belief is false.
It is also extremely dangerous for Ukraine’s future. The war is not trending toward a stable stalemate, but toward Ukraine’s eventual collapse.
Ukraine’s best hope lies in a negotiated settlement that protects its security and promotes broader stability in Europe and the world.

Turbines use wind from passing traffic to generate electricity

Such a device can also be installed in places that are unsuitable for traditional turbines. The first such wind turbines were installed in Istanbul: they generate electricity using air turbulence created by traffic.

The ENLIL vertical turbine was developed by Istanbul Technical University and technology firm Devecitech

nothing ruins my motivation to send fixes to your open source project more than to ask me to sign a CLA for it.

sorry guys I'm just not that interested in reviewing a legal contract just to improve your software for free

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@hailey Well, it actually isn't "for free" if the fix would include code to be copyrightable. That would then place a future burden on the open source project.

Also: Investigating whether the fix is copyrightable or not takes time (= cost)

Thus, the only possible solution an open source project has is to ask contributors to sign a CLA.

Sidenoting about Bluesky's protocol opening of self-hosted PDS: that's decentralization (of a part of the system, though not the index). To earn the label federation, each host should also be able to set, enforce and observe their own rules. But because there's just the bsky.social index, it's not federated.

troed,

@osma The "you have to join our Discord channel and say 'pleeeease'" sort of gives it away ;)

troed,

@osma I admit to not having studied the protocol, but from their description it sounds like a new "node" (PSD) need to get included in a list that then gets scraped for content.

I see rising amount of spam accounts on inactive servers. People should continue using and upkeeping their servers, otherwise they end up being hives for spammers. This is like a textbook case of how not to set up servers. You should not set up and forget. It's constant work.

troed,
@troed@sangberg.se avatar

@rolle "Cool! I can set up my own server [for myself]" is vastly different from "Cool! I can set up my own server and allow other to use it too!".

I feel way too few casual admins realize this. As soon as you're setting up a servers for others you're basically taking on a job. If you don't see yourself having the time and energy to work that job for the foreseeable future then ... please don't.

User aaronrosspower at Threads:

”When Musk bought Twitter and there was that initial wave of people fleeing, Mastodon could've kept that momentum, and probably won out as the next big thing, if it'd (1) opened mastodon.social to registrations as the default server and (2) added quote posts. I'm convinced Bluesky's success was entirely because Mastodon didn't do (1) and (2), and while the Fediverse will still likely be the main decentralized network, once Threads federates, the process was significantly slowed and fractured.”

When will people understand that Mastodon or any other Fediverse app will not need to ”success” and be mainstream? I think we are not driven by profit and corporate gain. I think we will exist as long as there are people running their web services.

Please note: This is just my opinion. I have to state this, because I’ve been blocked for less. Comment if you agree/disagree.

@glynmoody Yeah I think this is how interglacials usually end. While we've affected it this time, it fits with one of the explanations on how interglacials end. The warm climate during 10-12000 years finally cause the Greenland ice to melt enough to disrupt the AMOC and the ice starts spreading again from the north.

Three things I've learned about fruit as an adult:

  1. The apple core is a lie. If you eat the apple like there wasn't any core, it'll taste just the same and you'll barely notice it (and even if you bite through the seeds, you have nothing to worry about unless you eat a metric shit-ton of apples every day).

Also: eating the whole apple (and the stem, although it's a bit hard to chew) is good for your microbiome.
