Soviet double agent Anthony Blunt may have helped Hitler too

In 1979 the art historian was outed as one of the Cambridge spies recruited by Stalin. Shocking new evidence suggests he may also have passed deadly secrets to the Nazis, Robert Verkaik reports

@kravietz good thing the USA steered clear of any Nazis, amirite!

@Sum_ID

Well, no US post-war acquisition of Nazi scientists can really beat Soviet alliance with Nazis between 1939 and 1941, which included joint invasion on Eastern Europe and then supplying Nazi Germany for two years bypassing Allied blockade while they conquered Western Europe.

@kravietz I'm guessing this would have been during the Nazi-Soviet nonaggression pact.

brie,

@kravietz @Loukas Well, the article mentions operation Market Garden, after Nazi-Soviet alliance was broken over fight for jointly-stolen spoils. Probably the guy was just motivated by ideology and shared values of both totalitarian regimes.

@brie @kravietz What sources are they using? I can't see the article.

@kravietz @brie Wow what a piece of shit! If he wasn't Josephine himself he certainly seems to have played a key role in throwing investigations into a Soviet link off the scent.

What is no less disgusting that Blunt himself is what happened to him post-war, that is… nothing. But British establishment likes to keep their traitors close, even the most disgusting, like Jimmy Savile. You can be more than sure that right now there’s a well-positioned and much respected mole selling UK’s secrets to Kremlin.

@kravietz @brie It was an interesting point about him being responsible for cleaning up after Edward the Nazi king. That explains a lot about how he was able to survive so long. As you say, they protect their own. And now we have Russian oligarchs in the house of Lords.

@Loukas

No, he’s said to have betrayed the Operation Market Garden to Germans, which was in 1944, long after Soviets and Nazis stopped being allies. This Allied failure however allowed Soviets to be the first to arrive to Berlin.

@kravietz @Loukas There are many myths about a betrayal of the plans for Market Garden.

But they all have been debunked.

And the western Allies, especially the US, simply didn't think Berlin was worth it since it would be divided in surrounded by the Soviet occupation zone anyway.

Their price was the Ruhr (which was also the main reason for Market Garden).

@t_mkdf

I don’t think this one is a myth since it’s pretty well sourced.

@t_mkdf @kravietz I agree to the extent that I think the article is exaggerating how important it was that the plans were leaked. The article doesn't even dare state that the German reaction was because the plans were leaked, it just suggests this might have been an outcome. But what it does say, with sources, is there was at least one source that tried to leak, and which was covered up by Blunt.
