So, given the recent announcements by 'Mastodon' HQ, it seems like a forgeone conclusion that every posts ever made on the Fediverse will be used at some point as AI fodder.
If you have an account on mastodon.social, you should consider migrating to another server ASAP.
If you have an account on any other server, now is a good time to check the settings of your account through the web interface and make sure the option "Opt-out of search engine indexing" is checked.
Just to be completely transparent on this last post:
I believe it's too late to save mastodon.social, between the 'let's federate with Threads!' thing (BAD IDEA) and now the entrance of VC, crypto and AI-related people in their board (VERY BAD IDEA), mastodon.social is too far gone to be salvageable.
Let users vote with their feet and leave this den of iniquity.
I believe the third strike is going to fall in the coming months. And, by then, I would not be surprises if they make 'improvements' to the Mastodon code base (and/or terms of services) that make leaving mastodon.social freaking difficult.
You have been warned: hit the road NOW before they close the doors and get bought by Meta (which, honestly, is probably how they are thinking of cashing out).

ActivityPub is a protocol for public social media posting. Anyone can scrape AP for "AI" purposes, or any other purposes, now, today.
But... this is the fediverse, where technical ignorance leads to hand-wringing freak-outs every few months as wave after wave of know-nothing wanna be fediverse influencers moronically proclaim HOW THINGS ARE.
SMH it's pathetic. It's the second worst part of this hellhole. (The worst part is the staggering number of neo-nazis, racists, bigots and other scum we have to block from using this PUBLIC PROTOCOL.)
@ParadeGrotesque call me a cynic, but I just assume that anything I post online is going to be fed to an AI anyway. The same people who couldn’t give a fuck about the software licenses or copyrights aren’t going to respect whatever rules one may set for indexing and crawling.
