@kaiserkiwi Pardon my ignorance here, but I've never messed with anything like stories. I always either immediately turned them off on other platforms or never used them in the first place.
What would stories add to mastodon that uploading video into a threaded toot doesn't allow? I'm curious to know what I might have been missing out on.
@SynAck They're in another context. A snapshot that vanishes after 24 hours. So the hurdle to share "irrelevant" stuff is much lower. Stuff I want to share but don't want to be archived.
It's hard to describe. But on Instagram for example I pretty much only use Stories. Once in a while I post a picture I really like but the "noise" vanishes after 24 hours.
@kaiserkiwi ah, okay. So kinda like the Snapchat way of doing things, or like Signal where you can post something and then it goes away after a while.

So ideally in your mind, it would be something that you could set per toot instead of using the feature that deletes all your old posts of a certain age.
That makes sense to me. It could go right next to the ability to disable comments on a toot. Seems like a good safety and security feature, honestly. "Temporary Toots".
@SynAck Set it per post would be fine for me too. But I actually like the way you browse Stories and that it's independent of the 853 unread posts on the main timeline. 😅
I guess I would like to have both. The one you describe for general appeal and Stories for everyone that wants them.
