GottaLaff,

So I did ask, but seems you didn't have anything you needed included in my next How to Move to Canada series post... which is fine!

But I bet you will AFTER I post it, right? Oh well. I'll try to answer what I can if you do have questions.

I'm nearly done writing it.

@GottaLaff I haven't seen your posts!? Is there a list/link!?

@GottaLaff in case you don't already know. You can be, and many many people, both a Canadian and American Citizen. Canada will welcome you as a citizen if you choose to go through the steps. They do not require you to renounce citizenship. And I know from family that if you are born American, you are always American and can vote unless you go to an Embassy and formally renounce.

All this to say that one day, I hope you become Canadian. You seem nice. ;)

@chris Didn't we have this convo the other day? Thank you by the way.

No, we're just permanent residents, no intention of becoming citizens. I covered that in my first 2 posts.

@GottaLaff Unasked question AFAIK that might be useful for someone

Overstays? I know how we handle them in the US but curious if that might be an option for some.

Given income outside Canada of course.

Never really thought about it, since so much focus here is on the southern border.

@_ That I can't answer.

I will take whatever you want to share.
At my ripe old age, I have finally learned about boundaries. ;)

@GottaLaff I know you have had expert help. What have been the largest obstacles in your own experience, even with that assistance, and what might you think the obstacles would be for someone of more modest means, trying to do this “on their own”?

GottaLaff,
@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@DWTSquawk7600 Good question, btw. I highly recommend using an attorney unless you qualify easily.

@GottaLaff@mastodon.social avatar

@DWTSquawk7600 I covered that in my second post, I believe. Maybe even my first.

On their own depends on each individual. There are SO many options, it's very specific, so I can't address that very well.

@GottaLaff
I went through a very similar experience (almost identical) coming from Canada to the US in 2000. Got my greencard in 2003.

One delay was my University transcripts were in French (CMR) and getting them translated added a few months to the process.

Back then it was harder but the process of importing your car was tedious. Not so much anymore since almost all US cars have daytime running lights and an speedometer that can switch to metric.

Exotic pets are another problem area.

@funguy2playwith Oh, thanks for reminding me to write about my car transport.

Yes, it's easier now.
