My parents needed months to sell their house, in 1980. It was priced below the other houses in the area, and still is less. (It's a conspicuously different house.) They carried the second mortgage themselves, to get the sale.
(They'd bought it as a foreclosure, getting a better price by telling the bank we'd do the fixing-up ourselves. Turned out to need stuff the bank would never have found.)
@JaneinNJ I'm guessing you haven't been reading the thread (re: scents) or my posts.
I'll fill you in:
If someone wants our house, the scent won't affect them unless it smells bad. If they don't want to buy it, the best scent in the world won't change anything. Gimmicks aren't my thing & yes, we did try it. Bupkes.
Price: We already lowered, even though we didn't have to: We've always been exactly in the sweet spot, even a little low; every agent agrees. We only lowered bc of interest rates
@GottaLaff Oh, I am so sorry to hear that. Here in the NYC metro market, it’s the opposite, esp since the pandemic began. Houses are selling within a very short time at way inflated prices.
@GottaLaff takes time. It’s hard to find the right buyer. Sometimes, you just turn around and there they are, waiting. I’m sure it will happen before you know it and you’ll be delighted!
@GottaLaff I’m an atheist but I have family and friends who buried a statue of Saint Joseph in their front yard (near the For Sale sign, upside down, facing the house) and claim it’s what finally sold their house. 😂

When I studied feng shui, my teacher told me to tell people to put something yellow at eye level in every room to sell a house. 💛 I am sure you have already heard it all, Laffy! @GottaLaff@MarkRDavid Been there. Have you ever seen a home for sale with a picture tour given by a realtor in an inflatable dinosaur suit? Saw that once on zillow & thought it was very funny. Dino looking in fridge, Dino reclining, etc. I got so desperate to sell my house I considered it. But mostly the idea made me laugh often, & that is what I needed. It will sell. Hang in there!
@GottaLaff now I’d be grossed out if it smelled like coffee. Coffee smells like garbage to me. I think that’s because mom used to drink a lot of coffee and I’d smell in our trash can. 😳
@GottaLaff I recall walking into an otherwise nice home that smelled like a wet dog. I walked right back out. My hubby and realtor checked out the house in case otherwise ok. Nothing special so my retreat wasn’t a problem.
Buyers don't buy because it smells like cookies - but they are more comfortable, and associate the house with their life, and consequently are more accepting of quirks and differences...
@GottaLaff other than like when we’d relocated once in 2 days we viewed 65 houses. No joke. Many had similar floor plans so if one would’ve had that distinction it’d helped identify it. @video_manager
@GottaLaff it was nuts. Way too many. Hindsight and many relocations later, location is number one priority. Then narrow down to desires. @video_manager
@GottaLaff@video_manager@JanisKay I’m wondering if there might be any external factors that could be discouraging buyers. When I bought my house, I ruled out quite a few because neighbors had unkempt properties and/or a whole pack of kids, the houses were on busy streets or there was vacant land that could be developed. (The last one ended up coming to fruition when they crammed in a bunch of small homes down the block from me.)
@JeanPoole_AZ Nope. It's a fully developed neighborhood with nothing offensive anywhere. The street and surrounding streets are immaculate. The street isn't busy at all, nor are adjoining streets. We're virtually on a cut de sac (our street intersects with one), it's quiet, manicured, one of the most desirable around. @video_manager@JanisKay
