❌ turn EU's asylum database into a tool of #MassSurveillance
❌ record & process huge amounts of personal data about migrants and asylum seekers, which is intrusive & disproportionate
#EU#Biometrics#EURODAC#Surveillance#FacialRecognition#AsylumReform: "On Wednesday (10 April), the EU is set to vote on a new set of asylum and migration reforms. Among the many controversial changes proposed in the new migration pact, one went almost unnoticed — a seemingly innocent reform of the EU's asylum database, EURODAC.
Although framed as purely technical adjustments, the reality is far more malicious. The changes to EURODAC will massively exacerbate violence against people on the move.
Reform of this 20 year-old database will make it the technological sword of EU's hostile asylum and border policies. It will harness the most nefarious surveillance technologies that exist to date — namely the capture, processing and analysis of biometric data — and enable EU states to have full control over migrants' body and movements.
With the collection of biometrics, the body has already become a "passport" for many. Biometrics is the process of making data out of a person's biological or physiological characteristics. Fingerprints, facial images and iris scans are among the forms of biometrics most widely used by states to uniquely identify a person." https://euobserver.com/opinion/158292
🚨 The #EURODAC expansion into a #MassSurveillance tool is a part of the wider #MigrationPact, which has some of harshest proposals in EU's migration policy history.
161 civil society groups are urging MEPs to reject the Pact in the @europarl_en vote ✊🏾

📣 On today's #InternationalMigrationDay, let’s shed light on EURODAC – the EU database for the registration of asylum-seekers. EU member states want to turn it into a surveillance tool that treats people seeking protection like criminal suspects!
Deportations, detention & racialized criminalization: This will increase immensely due to the reform of the EU database! We need to protect human rights & stop the expansion of #EURODAC!
#EURODAC is being expanded to enforce the EUs discriminatory & hostile asylum & migration policies: increasing deportations, detention & .. @statewatch
Europe’s (digital) borders must fall – End the expansion of the EU’s EURODAC database
We, 110 organisations of the civil society, call for an end to the expansion of #EURODAC, the #EU database for the registration of asylum-seekers. EURODAC, designed to collect and store migrants’ data, is being transformed into an expansive, violent surveillance tool that will treat people seeking protection as crime suspects. This will include children as young as 6 whose fingerprints and facial images will be integrated into the database.
We and the 109 signatories demand:
That the EU institutions immediately reject the expansion of EURODAC.
For legislators to prevent further violence and ensure protection at and within borders when rethinking the EURODAC system.
For legislators and EU Member States to establish safe and regular pathways for migrants and protective reception conditions.
