I am inclined to agree. :kekw2:

Kurt,

@nazokiyoubinbou
Sorry. I disagree in every single statement.

  1. Apple is a good alternative for people that don't want to modify the Android system
  2. Minimal GApps still installs the worst spyware components play-store and -services
  3. is compatible with android 13 and actively worked on. Are you confusing it with nanodroid?

Those who are interested in development and mobile phone should follow @divested, the developer of . It's a tremendous project. I especially recommend the docs section on https://divestos.org/ which has a lot of info about Android components and workings.

Kurt,

@cryptgoat @divested good news. Tad joined fediverse and already engages in discussion.

Can anyone involved with the project comment on whether it is only "partially" open source as some claim? (https://blog.privacyguides.org/2022/04/21/grapheneos-or-calyxos/#update-frequency)

Edit: I should have read the article more closely. The binary blob is optional and off by default, so IMO, the whole debate against MicroG is aughable, unless you have a compatibility problem, which is definitely possible, though it probable. Sandboxed GSF has its pros and cons, too.

I'm leaning towards going back to from .

Graphene's security features are really fantastic, but I miss .
I understand that Graphene does a lot of sandboxing of Google Play, but I'd rather have as little google stuff running as possible, and I don't like missing notifications.

Unless there's a detailed explanation and analysis of how the two compare, I'm not convinced that running full GSF in a sandbox is better than a mostly FOSS re-implementation of it.

@joshthetechie

I've had really good luck with , but I understand that it isn't as compatible as Sandboxed GSF.
In-app purchases don't work, and I believe Uber and Lyft had some issues which may or may not be fixed by now.

Over all, to me, a 75% compatible FOSS re-implementation of GSF is preferable to a tightly locked-down 99.9% sandboxed true GSF, except for the question of the bit of stub code that MicroG supposedly downloads from Google and runs.

I'm trying to find more info on that

After almost 2 years of daily driving as my main phone I gave up.

Initially the battery lasted for a very short time (like few hours). But I could live with that. Recently this was greatly improved (it could last whole day), but still I kept it connected to a cable out of habit.

For a very long time I didn't try to use the sdcard slot, because I had no need for it. But when I finally tried, it turned out it doesn't work (purism forums has a bunch of topics on that, it's not an uncommon issue). But I could live with that.

The GPS receiver also does not work (see https://forums.puri.sm/t/librem-5-gps-location-tracking/14153/285). But I could live with that.

The tiny metal swing thingy you press with a needle to push out the sdcard and sim card tray broke off. But I could live with that.

Hard to tell exactly when, but my phone started to behave weirdly with cellular connection. I didn't receive SMS and calls. And there was no indication on the phone that something is wrong. And I could not live with that.

I got myself a 4 and flashed it with with (https://lineage.microg.org/). I have quite a lot of experience with using this combo, because I usually took phones that were too_old/broken/not_good_enough from my wife and using them as a secondary devices. I had to use unofficial compilations where not everything worked. Now I had a pleasure of using a fully working image for fully supported device. And it works fast, has plenty of internal storage and currently phone claims battery can last for almost 1,5 days (real measurement pending).

I've just realized that is now officially available on my phone (Xiaomi 11 lite 5g ne)!
I've just backup my files and tomorrow I'll be flashing it, hopefully everything goes well!
All of these days I've been using linage os with custom nikgapps config to remove some of the Google spokiness but I think microg is good enough for me. I'll probably gonna do a blog post with all the details.
Thanks @e_mydata

Has anyone used Signal without microG? How's the battery performance? Did it impact you in the long run?
