Love & Monsters (2020)

My wife & I enjoyed this a lot.
Had Gamma World/Fallout vibes.

Twists weren't really surprising, and the sci-fi premise was vaguely ridiculous.

But the action was good. And the effects were plentiful, decent, and well placed.

The acting was solid, if not award winning. And, rather than sarcastic or disappointing jerks, characters felt more grounded than I expected, displaying a modicum of empathy, maturity, or understanding.

Watched Meet Me In St Louis. Pretty cute, but a little saccharine for me. Garland was incredible as expected, and Astor was hilarious. The supporting cast overall was very good, but the script was entirely above my expectations. Felt like a Marx Brothers film in places.

[Movie Review] The Pagan King: a Latvian medieval epic loaded with Pagan imagery ~ This is not a subtle film. This is like Game of Thrones without a hint of subtlety and stranger accents.

Watched Batman Returns. I knew it was a movie but this felt so much weirder and less conjoined than the first . I still enjoyed it for what it was, but it was mostly for Devito just being amazing at being weird, and less for the plot or characters.

Largely, rewatching these 90s Batman movies has made me want to see Adam West again because I have such fond memories of his Batman.

Wonka was great! If you can go see it in the theaters, I highly recommend going in with as little knowledge about it as possible.

Not sure when the last time I enjoyed a movie that much - well maybe the Spiderverse movies.

Finally got around to watching the Venture Bros. Movie: Radiant is the Blood of the Baboon Heart.

It's a good send-off, and I'm glad the series got its finale. I really enjoyed it, and was nice to get some closure on the series. But I'm also disappointed. This movie feels like it wanted to be much more (which to be fair, it was based on the scripts for a final season), it rushes the plot in a way that a season wouldn't. I'm glad we got something instead of nothing. It just makes me disappointed in Adult Swim that we didn't get a final season instead.

Go watch it if you are a fan of the Venture Bros. It's good.

Watched White Christmas. I walked in not really expecting much, but came out really impressed. There was a surprising amount of pathos for what was effectively a vehicle for a bunch of song and dance numbers. The General felt very of a time, but the romances really landed for me.

Vera-Ellen had incredible moves and had a fantastic chemistry with Kaye who stole the show.

Watched The Little Princess. It was the first Temple movie I’ve seen as an adult and she was the stand out by far. It was fun to see Romero (in brown face yikes) in a much earlier role than I’m used to.

The singing and dancing was by far the stand out in an otherwise tiring movie. I spent most of it thinking that this time difference is about the same as the First Gulf War.

Having it come out during WW 2 would be tough!

Thanks to @TSPOE_pods
for the rec.

Watched The Color Of Money. It was a fine enough sports movie and the camera work was phenomenal. Seeing Cruise’s transformation throughout was pretty astounding, but overall it made me want to watch The Hustler again.

It felt softer and less impactful than I wanted but was still a fun watch and had a lot of the same lessons of the first one, even if the ending was a much happier course.

Enjoyed Good Omens, but man did that second season lose the plot. It's like they bought an option to write a second season and just wrote a bunch of loosely connected scenes they predicted the audience would like.

OC Kbin mini movie review: Renfield, 2023

I watched this last night and thought I'd share my thoughts. Renfield, 2023 dir Chris McKay. Comedic action/horror based on a Robert Kirkman property and also an example of Universal trying to leverage its movie monster heritage. Premise: Renfield attends a support group to deal with his feelings about his boss, Dracula....

Annihilation

Some pretty effective cosmic horror. Cast is great and special effects are striking. Not for you if you need your plot wrapped all up by the end.

Watched This Is 40. It was a little too accurate and captured a lot of the same vibes as Knocked Up but has somehow tracked my life. A lot of it doesn’t age well, but there are some great moments.

Not sure the movie is one I’d recommend to anyone who hasn’t been married for 5 years, but it has a lot of moments of truth.

Watched Black Dragons. What a wild ride. Full of lots of racism, it is still always fascinating for me to watch movies made during the war. The acting was kinda bumpy, with lots of excuses for Lugosi to stare at people in strange ways, but Barclay did well with a very weird dialogue set.

Watched Gone Girl. I was excited for this one for a long time, knowing that it was twisty and looking forward to something like Primer or Memento.

Sadly the characters just felt so unrealistic to me that I couldn’t get into it. Maybe it’s that I predicted the twists too much or that the twists were just the most ridiculous actions, but this one fell flat for me.

Watched My Cousin Vinny. I forgot how fun this movie is. It’s deeply crass, especially for 1992, but just all in good fun, and the comedic bits are held in check by the weight of the plot line.

Tomei is obviously incredible, while Macchio is only okay. The defendants are both whatever but the strength of Tomei and Pesci against the judge (who starred in The Munsters and died shortly after this) keeps this as an all timer.
