Dutch philosopher and scholar Baruch Spinoza was born in 1632. One of the foremost and seminal thinkers of the Enlightenment, modern biblical criticism,
and 17th-century Rationalism, including modern conceptions of the self and the universe, he came to be considered "one of the most important philosophers—and certainly the most radical—of the early modern period".

Document through which Spinoza was banned by the Portugese Jewish community of Amsterdam, Thursday, 27 July 1656 = 6th of Av, 5416. Escamoth, register of the resolutions of the parnassim (rulers) of the Portugese Jewish synagogue Talmud Tora, Amsterdam. Translation of the Portugese transcription above The Lords of Maamad [the leaders of the community] announce that they have long known of the wrong opinions and erroneous behavior of Baruch de Spinoza and by various means and warnings have tried to turn him away from the wrong path. As they did not obtain any result and, on the contrary, the horrible heresies that he practiced and taught were increasing, as well as his unheard-of behavior on which there are many testimonies that were given in the presence of the mentioned Spinoza, all analyzed in the presence of the Messrs. Chachamim, they decided according to them that an anathema should be imposed on him and that he be set apart from the nation of Israel, according to the following declaration by Jérem: By the verdict of the angels, and the judgment of the saints, we impose jérem, expel, execrate and curse Baruch of Spinoza, with the consent of this Holy community, before the Sacred Books of the Law with its six hundred and thirteen precepts that are written in them, with the jérem with which Josué imposed Yerijó, with the curse with which Elisha cursed the young people and with all the execrations written in the Law.

Did you read my first #TranspiringConsiderations essay published here on the fediverse?

While finally getting all my blog posts published on my newly updated website, I realized most of the followers I now have probably didn't read those first posts. It's amazing to reflect on how much the community I'm a part of here has grown since I began publishing these in February! And heck, doing some light proofreading and editing as I uploaded the piece, I realize my voice as a writer has grown too!

Well, if you want to go back and read the first of these pieces, you can find it for the first time in continuous webpage format (instead of a fediverse thread): https://www.joscelyntranspiring.com/post/death-stalks-us

My fourth piece was a bit snarky, but worked to help apply and communicate emerging trans scholarship from the field of Genocide Studies. You can now find "It's not genocide, it's just sparkling eradication" on my website now:

Putting the last few updates on the seminar I'm presenting today on transing peace and conflict studies...and finding renewed confidence.

Yesterday, I felt so much anxiety and uncertainty. It has been over six months since I last really engaged with any of my scholarly work since I crashed out of my PhD and got ground out of a research career. I thought maybe I couldn't do this kind of thing anymore. Maybe I've lost the thread.

10 minutes into updating my presentation and I'm like, oh yeah, I forgot, I'm one of the only experts in the world on this exact topic 😅😅😅

Anyway, if you're in , you can come to the at to participate! Or, if you're elsewhere, it will be streamed on Zoom and you can register at the link below!

I'll be presenting a seminar for the Kroc Center at University of San Diego later this month in case anyone is interested.

Apparently I'm talking about transing peace and conflict studies tomorrow? It's been a hot second since I've presented academic work...time to do some panicked updating to my materials 😅

If you are curious, you can watch on zoom as I queer up conversations about peace and conflict in this world!
