ABOLISH SEISMIC BLASTING SPECIAL PROSPECTING AUTHORITY PERMITS (SPA)
A Special Prospecting Authority (SPA) is a specific type of permit that allows #companies to buy access to large areas of our #oceans to use #SeismicBlasting to search for #oil and #gas, and Carbon Capture and Storage locations below the ocean floor.
Seismic blasts are how the oil and gas industry surveys the ocean floor. Seismic vessels tow an array of airguns and audio receivers (hydrophones) behind them in the water.
These blasts are among the loudest human-made sounds in the #ocean, just short of those caused by explosive devices, and have a devastating effect on #MarineLife.
If approved, it will be the world’s largest 3D #SeismicBlasting project on record.
Companies’ applications for plans to conduct seismic blasting go to the regulator NOPSEMA for approval, and then to the administrator NOPTA to be granted an SPA permit.
This action is about safeguarding critical marine #habitats, preserving #biodiversity, and protecting the livelihoods of #communities that depend on healthy oceans.
ConocoPhillips' seismic application, which was submitted to the #Biden administration, requests testing across more than 270,000 acres of the Arctic. It would involve months of dragging heavy thumper trucks and other machinery across a fragile #ecosystem.
Sorry #CouchPeloton, we were a DNS last night. It's a whale of a tale! Dad took us in to the city (Naarm - Melbourne) on the bike (a 30km roundtrip) to the Whale Song not Seismic Blasting rally. We had a great time there, including listening to a Gunditjmara woman from SW Victoria talking about seacountry and the importance of whales in indigenous cultural songlines.
How silly is it the Australian 🇦🇺 Government allowing exploring for more oil and gas, damaging marine ecosystems when we have enough Fossil Fuels already to cook the planet?
So when we got home Dad fed us and himself and fell pooped into his fav armchair and promptly fell asleep. So we missed getting our #FRATL in. I know, it was frustrating for us, though we are proud to march in support of our cousin mammals, the great whales, and all the little zooplankton.
Dad has posted his Iphone photos of the Whale Song not Seismic Blasting Rally in Naarm at Flickr, all creative commons licensed. We feature of course and were happy that we were part of a small dog contingent barking (metaphorically) our support for marine life (we were all very well behaved). 🐶 🐶 🐕
The Gulf of Mexico is home to Rice's whales, one of the world's most endangered whale species. Fewer than 50 of these magnificent mammals remain — yet they have no federally protected critical #habitat.
WE HAVE UNTIL AUGUST 11 TO STOP MASSIVE SEISMIC BLASTING
The #SeismicBlasting proposal between Victoria and Tasmania impact #BlueWhale habitat and the #ZeehanMarinePark .
A joint venture between seismic survey companies #TGS and #SLB-Schlumberger is trying to get regulatory approval for seismic blasting over 55,000 sq km of our #oceans. Now is our chance to provide public comment that these plans should be refused to protect our oceans and #MarineLife.
