More than a fifth of the 11,500 #endangered animal, plant & fungi species in #Greece are “critically endangered” & thus are #UnderThreat of #extinction a re-evaluation of the country’s #RedList has found.

The #Environment Ministry published the revised list to commemorate #European Natura 2000 Day, the anniversary of the creation in 1992 of what is now the world’s largest coordinated network of #ProtectedAreas, which in the present day includes more than 27,000 sites.

Australia's roads are "killing corridors" for biodiversity
Mobility design for extinction records

"Appin Road is known as Australia's 'killing corridor' because of the large number of endangered koalas killed on the stretch. Increased traffic on south-west Sydney's Appin Road has resulted in 32 of the endangered marsupials being killed on the notorious stretch since July 2022 – roughly half of all deaths in the district over the same period. Wildlife advocates have long referred to it as Australia's "killing corridor".

Koala in the gutter
In Bellingen, we reported about the widening of Gleniffer road to aid tourism and the timber extraction industry. Once a quiet thoroughfare, Tuckers Nob SF is now logged and clear-felled in large parts. Vehicles are enticed to speed though the once remnant forests where koalas had their home. Recently one disoriented koala was viewed in the gutter. It seems a matter of time before the speeding vehicles will knock down the last homeless marsupials.

Logging hasn’t truly stopped in Victoria

"Whether for fuel breaks, salvage logging, or private land logging, native forest logging hasn’t stopped in Victoria. It will continue for many years, and the logs cut from these operations will be sold commercially."

"Much of this logging is not be fully regulated, as the Office of the Conservation Regulator is in the same department as the one conducting fuel break and salvage logging. It is difficult for a government department to regulate itself. This regulator also has no power over logging on private land."

Microplastics found in every human testicle in study

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/20/microplastics-human-testicles-study-sperm-counts

Only two studies, and both are small, but it should worry even the rich. They can’t avoid them. How ironic if humanity’s pollution is a leading factor in the extinction of the species!

No big bang, just a sad whimper.

Professor Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI,” is “very worried about AI taking lots of mundane jobs.” That’s why he has advised U.K. government officials that universal basic income would be a very good idea. BBC News talks to Hinton about who would benefit most from AI, who would suffer from it, and the emerging human-extinction threats facing humans. https://flip.it/QBBzZB

About the assumptions we make in .

It is a mistake to think of as warm and cuddly. Many, perhaps most, encounters between and are the result of the former treating the latter as characters.

One reason “ are ” made immediate sense to me was a vivid childhood memory: when I was about ten, I thought some were cute and wanted to pet them. had other ideas. Yeah, don’t do that.

It is equally a mistake to assume nature is All , All The Time. Fighting takes a lot of energy, and wild animals—including our own distant ancestors—are in constant peril of . Even a minor can lead to and .

Violence is a tool of survival, to be sure, whether in , self-defense, or squabbles over and . Unnecessary violence is a quick road to . Most animals would rather do something else, when they can.

So before you fall back on “red in tooth and claw” as a default, look for other explanations. They’re usually more interesting anyway.

Scientists tracked a young #whale's journey before he vanished. What they learned could help save his species.

#Bishop’s story, from birth to presumed death, shows the extreme danger facing right #whales, which could be extinct in 3 decades if they continue to disappear at the present rate. Bishop’s species is not doomed to #extinction …but time is running out.

In most ways #Bishop was a normal #RightWhale. For the first year of his life, his mother nursed & protected him, & he learned to feed by swimming, mouth agape, through patches of plankton floating near the surface.

But on Jan 20, 2015, Bishop became something more: a precious source of data that would help scientists better understand the dangers afflicting his species.
