Je savais déjà que ce format permetait d’avoir des fichiers plus petit de par son utilisation dans le web.
Mais découvrir qu’il permet une meilleur qualité visuelle m’a convaincu !

AVIF est particulièrement mauvais sur les petites images, où PNG fait systématiquement mieux que AVIF.
Pour la compression sans perte de qualité, il faut utiliser WebP (ou JPEG XL dans quelques années) et non AVIF.
Se siete stanchi del solito visualizzatore di immagini per Windows oggi vi presentiamo questo progetto open source e con licenza GNU chiamato PicView. Attualmente è disponibile solo per Windows, tuttavia essendo open source se dovesse piacere a qualcuno potrebbe anche essere portato su altre piattaforme.
PicView è un visualizzatore di immagini, è possibile aprire una vasta quantità di estensioni (molte di più del visualizzatore per immagini predefinito su Windows) come ad esempio .psd, .webp e .svg oltre ovviamente ai classici .png e .jpg.
Una delle caratteristiche di PicView è secondo noi la sua velocità nell’aprire un file e a mostrare i successivi. È davvero molto rapido! Oltre a questo ha alcune funzionalità molto interessanti come la possibilità di vedere rapidamente gli EXIF di qualunque immagine ad esempio o la possibilità di creare con un solo click uno slideshow delle immagini all’interno di una cartella.
PicView, un solo programma ma con molte funzionalità
È inoltre disponibile un’automatizzazione di alcuni passaggi (batch resize) dove potrete convertire automaticamente un’intera cartella di immagini cambiandone l’estensione (.webp, .jpg o .png) comprimendo o meno le immagini e decidendo anche un eventuale ridimensionamento. Un processo davvero molto utile se avete la necessità di modificare tante immagini in una volta sola senza impazzire.
Oltre a quanto detto sono presenti anche altre piccole chicche interessanti come la possibilità di inserire degli effetti grafici (sono circa una trentina in tutto) tra cui il bianco e nero, il filtro “old movie”, il pixelamento o la sfocatura. Un’altra funziona interessante è la possibilità, non sempre presente in queste applicazioni, di rimanere in primo piano così da non rischiare distrazioni.

Il y aura bientôt dix ans, la question du remplaçant du vénérable JPEG se posait déjà. En 2015, plusieurs grandes entreprises du numérique se sont rassemblées pour travailler sur la question. Alphabet, Amazon, AMD, Apple, Cisco, Intel, Meta, Mozilla, Microsoft et Netflix ont alors formé l’Alliance for Open Media.
Netflix utilise l' #AVIF.
Apple et Samsung utilisent l' #HEIC.
Google le #WebP.
I have a bunch of #WEBP images in various folders. Is there a tool that will let me easily batch convert them all to #JPG or #PNG, keeping the converted files in the original folders?
Has anyone else encountered and / or figured out why an #Instagram archive import into @pixelfed might not display all the posts available in the archive at the selection step? In my case, I only see the posts from the beginning ~2015 until some time in 2021, but all of 2022 and 2023 just won't show up (although I can clearly see it in the archive if I open it on my computer).
@pixelfed I may have found something related to the issue - at the cutoff (where the images stop to show in the import selector in #Pixelfed) it seems that the files are no longer #JPG but rather #WEBP format.
Honestly, the #Webp is on programs/websites now. 10 years ago, sure. But it's increasingly the default and websites that serve webp don't "support" it and supporting it is often as easy as changing a list of extensions and updating imagick to a version from the last 6 or so years
Wow! The webp is less than half the size of the PNG. You may need to install a #webp package to view it outside your browser.
