I see some conversations again about how Mastodon Link Previews work. Here’s my research on that topic from last year.

@box464 I wish the bug with #WebP and #AVIF for preview images would finally be fixed.

Sorting issue 27370 would be a good start toward a proper fix: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/27370

Wyszło 0.10, i bije jeszcze bardziej.

Wait what? Is 2023 already done? 😅
Well, I wish I had time to do a retrospect on how the web, with emphasis on images, has developed in the last year.

Top-of-mind highlights we worked on with ImageEngine in 2023:

🧵

jonarnes,

🌱 Sustainability. Particularly proud of implementing a policy for ImageEngine in 2023. Not perfect, but a good start. Even more happy to notice that some customers choose ImageEngine because of this! We're continuing the efforts in 2024

🏞️ We launched . too, but JPEGXL is far superior wrt image quality and size.

➡️ https://lafibre.info/tv-numerique-hd-3d/avif/msg1051014/#msg1051014

This is really cool, but this is also very much a solved problem with newer codecs like . If Google would just embrace JXL & push for widespread support, we might actually be able to move past JPEG instead of using hacks like this. isn't going anywhere outside specific Web use cases, as much as I really like it due to its great coding efficiency for certain quality ranges.
