Question for my fellow academics:

How many concurrent projects is a comfortable number for you (i.e., allows you to work without feeling rushed)?

And what is the optimal number of meetings a day (i.e., that allows you to move things along, but also leaves you enough time for other things)?

My "favourite" thing about this study is the part where achaeologists who found hunting tools/weapons in women's graves assumed they were kitchen implements.

Like, "well Hans, in this woman's grave, we found what inscriptions at the time have named the Flail of Vengeance. As of right now, we are not sure to what culinary task this tool was turned, but conjecture that it was possibly the preparation of small pies."

So much this. (TT) PIs often fail as mentors; or managers for that matter. They get exactly zero hours of training (and often have zero hours of experience) on these matters. (note that: teaching != mentoring)

Professors / PIs seem to be hired on the basis of the science only (and then only on the ideas, not their execution), not on demonstrated competence in running a lab. All other collateral be damned.

Does anyone else take issue with, or have profound concerns about, platform science?

For clarity, it refers to the tendency the last decade for science to be organized into top down meta level networks (which at times, or more often than not, share a political and economic reality not to dissimilar to market based platform economics).

Hi Academics,

Question: in your professional life, I'm assuming that you have some people in mind who you respect and admire, and whose behaviours you try to emulate?

I'm curious if those are mostly fellow academics, or mostly people outside of academia, or a pretty even mix? Does the set of people whose behaviours you try to emulate vary much over time?

I have a theory with 5 hypotheses.

I pilot a study; only 3 of the 5 seem correct.

I preregister only these 3 and proceed as if I never considered the other 2.

I find strong support for all 3.

Is this good science (i.e., an appropriate use of preregistration)? Why or why not?

This line in Barbara Baig's writing book triggered a memory: "most adults are very self-conscious about learning anything new."

Years ago I took an ink painting class at my local arts center. A middle-aged woman cried because she wasn't immediately good at it. To me this is a convincing case for .
