My mobile robot starts at 0,0 on a coordinate plane facing down the x-axis. I want it to move to 3ft,4ft. What commands should I give it?
My "favourite" thing about this study is the part where achaeologists who found hunting tools/weapons in women's graves assumed they were kitchen implements.
Like, "well Hans, in this woman's grave, we found what inscriptions at the time have named the Flail of Vengeance. As of right now, we are not sure to what culinary task this tool was turned, but conjecture that it was possibly the preparation of small pies."
So much this. (TT) PIs often fail as mentors; or managers for that matter. They get exactly zero hours of training (and often have zero hours of experience) on these matters. (note that: teaching != mentoring)
Professors / PIs seem to be hired on the basis of the science only (and then only on the ideas, not their execution), not on demonstrated competence in running a lab. All other collateral be damned.
Business Insider found instances where Bill Ackman’s wife committed plagiarism in her dissertation. Now he’s promising to go after the entire faculty at MIT. This dark age of #academia just got darker. Beware should a rich man put you in his crosshairs. #academicchatter#academicmastodon
Does anyone else take issue with, or have profound concerns about, platform science?
For clarity, it refers to the tendency the last decade for science to be organized into top down meta level networks (which at times, or more often than not, share a political and economic reality not to dissimilar to market based platform economics).
My syllabus statement on AI generative text. Feel free to reuse CC0 and/or critique here with responses. Responses also welcome if you’re gonna use it (I might put a tally in the annual report)
Question: in your professional life, I'm assuming that you have some people in mind who you respect and admire, and whose behaviours you try to emulate?
I'm curious if those are mostly fellow academics, or mostly people outside of academia, or a pretty even mix? Does the set of people whose behaviours you try to emulate vary much over time?
Controversial #academic opinion:
Search committees shouldn’t request letters of recommendation from candidates until the phone interview stage, at the earliest. Take the pressure off of the candidates, their mentors, and the committee members. #academia#academicchatter#academicmastodon@academicchatter
This line in Barbara Baig's writing book triggered a memory: "most adults are very self-conscious about learning anything new."
Years ago I took an ink painting class at my local arts center. A middle-aged woman cried because she wasn't immediately good at it. To me this is a convincing case for #ungrading.
As promised, now that we’re at the end of the semester, a rant about #academia
We all know #highereducation in the USA is broken. Tuition is skyrocketing for less and less actual product: #education
This is the one “business” where the customer wants to be cheated; I do hate how our interaction with students has become customer service. #academicmastodon 1/x
On the #enshitification of #academic#publishing. Where scientists burn the candle at both ends, paying to read and publish their work, in what is the ultimate grift.
Oh look, my favorite:
An email from a student who can’t be at the first class because reasons blah blah blah can I tell him everything he’ll be missing blah blah blah will I accept late work? #academia#academicchatter#academicmastodon
