After scanning someone's glasses before using a Vision Pro headset, why did they go with physical inserts versus handling the adjustments computationally? Isn't it just math? Maybe it's math, but so significant that they don't yet have the computational headroom to do it in real time, but might be able to eventually?
@atpfm Where do I post a question for #askatp? My M1 MBP's fan runs very loudly whenever it's "docked" (plugged in and connected to my Thunderbolt Display), but is completely silent when on battery - and I can't notice any performace differences. Is there a way to stop the fan when it's plugged in? (I understand that may mean throtttling its performance, but that may be OK…)

Is it worth the extra cost to go for the 1TB iPad with the 16GB RAM over the 512GB with 8GB RAM? (I am not buying new but the difference in the used market is still considerable)
I will mostly be using for photo work, comic book reading and probably research when on the sofa. Basically getting it to replace my laptop which I hardly use. I don’t need it for real computer work got my desktop and home lab for that.
The extra storage is a real benefit to me, but finding it hard to justify the cost difference, if the RAM will help with photo work then it may swing it. I just don’t have much experience of iPads workloads and of that extra RAM would be of major benefit.
p.s. I am getting and iPad I don’t need another real computer. I am interested in experience around the extra ram in iPads and if it is worth it or not.
Where does Marco keep the bell? He is incredibly quick on the draw, even when the segue to file systems isn’t being telegraphed at all. How does he do it? Editing? A deep, instinctual knowledge of John Siracusa’s thought processes?
#askatp on the subject of old family videos, I’m in the process of importing DV tapes into digital, to put into my iCloud Photo Library. However the uncompressed file sizes are massive.
I’ve tried handbrake but I’m curious what settings you use to get a balance of speed, file size, and quality? HEVC? H.264?
I know there’s hardware encoders in M1 and I’ve tried videotoolbox but the quality seems to be drastically worse.
@atpfm sorry if you’ve already answered this question, but why are you using libsyn to host the podcast instead of self hosting? You guys already host your website and write your CMS. Is it really that much cheaper to outsource it or is it to avoid writing a feed generator? #askatp
@atpfm@gruber lots of podcasters are wondering why the Apple event was shot at night and aired at the later time. Do you think it could have been to further push the point that using the iPhone for shooting the footage at night was an even more remarkable feat. The timing being awkward for Europe was probably a minor casualty of that point. #askatp

What, in your #SwiftUI apps, still needs UIKit to create the experience you want? I want to stick to SwiftUI as much as possible, but it feels like there’s still a lot missing.
One example: using FocusState to focus an input when a sheet is presented is still not as “instant” as UIKit’s becomeFirstResponder.
Would you buy a Mac Studio M2 Ultra and a Studio Display or keep using a Macbook Pro M1 Max with a new Pro Display XDR? Roughly same budget but different results. Coding is primary task. #askatp@siracusa@marcoarment@caseyliss
@atpfm Do you think third party ARM chip provider could be the solution for the Mac Pro? Things like Fujitsu A64FX or Ampere at least show that ridiclously scaled up ARM solutions can exist?
