It is irrelevant how performant proprietary video codecs are.
There is zero purpose dedicating any time or energy supporting a system where every client and server has to pay a license to use it.

AV1, and upcoming open-source royalty-free competitors are the only future for video encoding.

A codec that no one can use is useless.

Rumored new 4K Chromecast may fix long-standing storage issues

It's still $50, would have a new remote, and will hopefully not have 8GB of storage.

About 6 months ago I got a bee in my bonnet about the quality of current codecs. I ended up doing more than 1000 encodes, comparing various codecs, presets and quality settings. A little over a month ago I wrote something up about it.
https://colinmckellar.com/2024/01/11/video-encoder-comparison/

colin,

Once I finished the first codec comparison, I discovered that both of the AV1 codecs I was testing had received substantial updates in the interim. I made the following post looking at how they have improved.

Hey everyone - wanted to announce a nice Aviator update that happens to coincide with an SVT-AV1-PSY update that we pushed just yesterday.

Aviator 0.5.1 has a couple new features, but chief among them is a new Subjective Tuning toggle for enabling encoder changes that improve visual quality at the expense of metrics. This is powered by SVT-AV1-PSY's new Tune 3 authored by Clybius; it adds subjectively motivated optimization to the existing Tune 2's great performance for an incredible balance of retaining fine detail in videos while still preventing blocking.

Here's a comparison encoded with Aviator (both 10-second videos were 7.5MB, down from the lossless source's 732.8 MB): https://slow.pics/c/tdrO5dY4

(the source is Netflix's foodmarket at 1080p)

If you prefer the smoother-looking, more appeal-oriented shot here, that is OK too - Subjective Tuning is toggleable!

Aviator 0.5.1 should be available on Flathub pretty soon. Enjoy!

Video Finally Introduces Video Decoding Extension

➡️ https://lafibre.info/tv-numerique-hd-3d/avif/msg1051014/#msg1051014

I would like to share a very cool project I've been working on with a couple of other very talented developers: SVT-AV1 PSY

https://github.com/gianni-rosato/svt-av1-psy

SVT-AV1-PSY is the Scalable Video Technology for AV1 (SVT-AV1 Encoder and Decoder) with perceptual enhancements for psychovisually optimal AV1 encoding. The goal is to create the best encoding implementation for perceptual quality with AV1.

We've already implemented a couple of unique features not present in mainline that do appear to produce BD-rate gains on a number of clips already!! Please check it out!

OC Comparing compression in AV1, x264, and x265

I recently got it into my head to compare the various popular video codecs in an effort to better understand how av1 works and looks compared to x264 and x265. I also had ideas of using a intel video card to compress a home video security setup, and what levels of compression I would need to get good results....

Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce Av1an Command Generator, a relatively simple tool I wrote in Zig for generating Av1an commands for based on a limited set of parameters. GitHub link is below:

https://github.com/gianni-rosato/av1an-command-gen

The bar to entry for understanding effective Av1an scripting is very high simply because there are a lot of well-documented ways to incorrectly set your parameters and very few who know what is psychovisually optimal. I am not one of those few, but because I know members of the AV1 community who've poured great time and effort into researching this kind of stuff, I am able to build from what they've learned. My more advanced tool, rAV1ator CLI, is also based on this research. I hope you enjoy!

The situation reminds me of the events that lead to the development of . Few people cared about open formats until a money grabbing change made people realise "ya know, this company we depend on could totally bankrupt us". Despite a change in policy saying they were kidding about the price hikes, too many people were scared to put the genie back in the bottle. Not exactly equivalent since exists.
