Blue Angels today over San Francisco were as usual quite a spectacle. The close-proximity flying is amazing. With real wars in the world, these military displays take on a different flavor. Note condensation on trailing edges in first photo and shock diamonds in the last.

The Blue Angels are unnervingly precise. They have to be. I learned that it is easier for them to fly in tight formation found to be far apart. And when I say “Tate formation,“ I mean 18 inches away from the next vehicle.

In order to fly in the Blue Angels an officer must have a minimum of 1,250 tactical-jet flight hours. The lead officer or Boss requires 3,000 hours.

A tradition that is enjoyed by many is the mostly annual visit of the Blue Angels and Fleet Week on the San Francisco Bay.
The Blue Angels typically fly a practice run on Friday and then perform Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
