kashifshah, (edited ) to random in Supreme Court: Are bans on homeless camps 'cruel and unusual' punishment?

Over half a million people are estimated to be homeless in the United States on any given night

Seems relatively obvious to me that the courts can’t handle this one and we need congress to act. Ratification of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) would require congress to write domestic laws to incorporate a core subset of the UN UDHR human rights.

Has anyone else noticed that for all the f-ing federal commissions on things as diverse as aged care costs, slashing Medicare, the meaning of woke, or child care costs; there is not one on homelessness and how to handle it?

"Lawmakers and the governor are so proud of themselves that they’ve already branded this misguided way to deal with homelessness “The Florida Model.” But mandating that a class of people exist behind by barbed wire and supervised by authorities in the name of “security” is called internment. It’s incarceration as punishment for being destitute. And, it’s despicable — reminiscent of some of the world’s worst atrocities."

In a decent society wed have had presidential level attention, massive home construction, and trillions of dollars applied to the homeless crisis. That we havent is a testament to the type of society we are.
NB: US has always had a large number of homeless, from colonial days to the present. It is almost a feature of the American system.

Black Lives Memorial Garden was swept from Cal Anderson Park last night. We were threatened with arrest and someone's home that wasn't even part of the garden area got thrown into a garbage truck.
Endless cruelty when we could use our resources to support each other.

For as much as I shit on the local paper, they finally printed something that this community needs to see.

I'll figure out how to share it because if/when it shows up on their website, it will be locked behind a paywall.

The guest column is an extremely straightforward gut-check regarding and the population of . An excerpt:

"We don't need to and cannot wait years for a large corporate builder to come with tax credit funding; we just need you or me and anyone and everyone in a blessed position to rent a home or apartment or room at 30% of someone's income. No, this isn't unrealistic. It's surprising; it's unusual. It's moral. And it's very possible."

No one who is a friend of mine will ever suffer starvation or homelessness. We feed & house our friends when they're struggling. We've been doing that since I was a young teen.

My home was known as a safe house for several of my teen friends & again known as a safe house in adult years when I was heavily immersed on high conflict (with industry/govt/police) on various frontlines.

We have given complete strangers use of our backyard to camp too. For folks who tell others - help them yourself then! They're because they've NEVER stepped out to help folks who aren't privileged.

I never had any issues with helping . I screened ppl before giving them safe space to tent for temporary times.

It doesn't take much to show some active -
to unhoused & folks. Not caring is evil. I judge people who choose evil - harshly.

My parents supported every single effort I tried to help ppl. They've always supported every one of my efforts to help ppl, animals & environment ❤❤🙌❤❤

Found 2 people passed out in the entrance of my apartment. I can't open the locked door because their feet are blocking it. They didn't twitch when the door hit their feet. X.x

I won't call the cops.

I'm triggered, feeling unsafe too.

More of this rebellion, please. The corporate dollar isn’t threatened by giving “unsellable” food and expired products to folks in need. There’s always some “business reason” to throw things away, but that’s entirely apathetic. This is the way. Raise your fist and fight that shit. Leave the goods out. E someone who helps.
