Shizuoka's gubernatorial election is now a close race, and speculation is mounting that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida might call a snap election this summer if the Liberal Democratic Party loses in the prefecture. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/05/23/japan/politics/shizuoka-election-kishida-rivals/

Shizuoka Gov. Heita Kawakatsu's surprise resignation marks the exit of a long-time opponent of JR Central's maglev line and raises the possibility of a successor who might give the green light for the construction of a tunnel in the prefecture. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/04/03/japan/politics/shizuoka-governor-maglev/

Central Japan Railway, or JR Tokai, is unlikely to meet its goal of opening the Chuo Shinkansen magnetic levitation line connecting Tokyo and Nagoya in 2027, President Shunsuke Niwa has said. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/03/30/japan/jr-tokai-maglev-delay/

Boeing is too big, and too vital to US interests, to be allowed to fail. But it's also pretty clear that the rot inside the company goes deep and wide. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/03/boeing-door-plug-probe-stalled-by-missing-records-overwritten-security-footage/

Update for clarity: I am totally behind the idea of letting this rogue company go bankrupt, and then nationalizing it -- and then firing -- and prosecuting -- senior management.

How about having building fewer planes and start making trains? 🤔

The First Room-Temperature Ambient-Pressure Superconductor (arxiv.org)

For the first time in the world, we succeeded in synthesizing the room-temperature superconductor (T(C) >= 400K, 127C) working at ambient pressure with a modified lead-apatite (LK-99) structure. The superconductivity of LK-99 is proved with the Critical temperature (T(C)), Zero-resistivity, Critical current (I(C)), Critical...
