"I think one of the biggest changes over the last eight years has been how the DPP – party elites, party loyalists, and ordinary people with slight DPP sympathies – thinks about the military."

Taiwan election results thread

The DPP's Lai Ching-te was elected president with 40% of the vote. Lai is currently the vice president and will be sworn in as president on 20 May

One surprising result was that Lai got more votes in New Taipei City than the KMT's candidate Hou You-yi. Hou is currently the Mayor of New Taipei

Update from Focus Taiwan

"The CEC has now officially counted 6,936,546 votes. It has Lai with an even bigger margin that the TV counts showed. He has 41.69 percent of the vote, compared to 33.15 percent for Hou and 25.17 percent for Ko."

It's pretty clear now that the DPP's Lai Ching-te will be Taiwan's next president.
