For those that don't know, I run #MastodonAU on spare infrastructure for my 'real' job, https://freepbxhosting.com.au, which means that Mastodon.au doesn't TECHNICALLY cost me anything, so I don't feel justified taking your money in donations.
(Plug: If you need anything to do with phones, we're more than happy to help you out, and most small businesses pay about $110/month flat rate for a complete phone system including calls).
INSTEAD, if you're feeling generous, and you're asking me 'well, who should I donate to then?', please donate to your local Greyhound Rescue Organisation. There's lots of them, they're good people, and they're doing good things. Even better, your donation (should!) be tax deductible, speak to your accountant, etc.
It's strange, but I feel the overarching lesson of Twitter was "how snarkily funny can I be" whereas on Mastodon it's "how kind and generous can I be" and good lord I am so here for this change, even if it results in less clickbait and "engagement"
@help after much pondering can I ask: would it be possible to replace our current "About" section for #MastodonAU with this variation:
No description because we couldn't make up our minds and went fishing instead 🎣 (*or pat the cat or doggo 🐱🐶)
there was this talk a while ago about instances blocking instances depending on who blocks threads preemptively and who doesn't... I'm not sure what happened after that but I feel my timeline has changed since then... not for the better or worse, just different #mastodonAU
also happy me one year on this instance :annoyingdog: :awesome: :blobcat_0w0: on the fediverse since 2018 but moved around a bit and now I'm here on #mastodonAU :blobcatdj:
Reflecting on
this past year on Mastodon and I am feeling so grateful for all the people who contributed in making this place so wonderful.
What a year it has been!
Thank you
to all the instance administrators.
Without you, we are literally nowhere 💙
Special thanks to mine who did an incredible job at scaling up this year to make sure everyone who wanted to make infosec exchange their home, could. Thank you so much @jerry :blobcatheart:
An immense thank you
also to all the developers who contributed to build the software we are all using. Without you, none of this is possible 💜
And a GIGANTIC thank you
to everyone who has made the Fediverse their home, and their new home 💚
Without you,
this is only an empty home. It is your presence that keeps it alive.
With all my heart,
thank you, to all of you ❤️
Long Live Mastodon and the Fediverse! :blobcatrainbow: :geodesic: :mastodon:
Still can't serve #mastodon. Still wondering if it ever works. Wondering if there's something that didn't get installed. Going to go back to the 10,000 easy steps to see why the javascript isn't serving. It isn't. It serves a different site, which suggests nginx is not able to start it. But it fails silently. I see no error. Now hackers are hitting the URL. This is not making me feel good about this code. Anyone out there who installed in #Ubuntu from source? Hello??? Hello???
Is it worth having different accounts on different instances like as a backup?
I'm very happy where I am at the moment especially seeing the move/migration to #iceshrimp/#hajkey on blahaj.zone its a super cool idea :drgn_happy:
Just wondering if there been any times where an instances just dropped off without notice? It's actually my biggest fear with alot of things here on the fedi but I guess that's just the risk ones take here?
@jessica@Dragon Yeah it's happened a couple of times. More usually it's a small server with a handful of users. There was recent near miss a couple of months back when previous #mastodonau owner announced rapid close (and it became clear that he had begun it with a commercial return in mind that didn't eventuate). It set off a flurry of migrations, until another server's admin took it on. I have multiple backups thanks to testing all the various fediverse platforms. My new Iceshrimp alt is hosted on ambrosia.moe, but there's more listed here https://iceshrimp.fediverse.observer/
