Jenny Nicholson's Star Wars Hotel video is brilliant. So wonderfully sums up everything wrong with Disney's way of doing things.

@virtualbri I'm sorry for the cast members who got screwed over, but I am happy to see Disney's strategy of charging Rolls-Royce prices for used-Chevy experiences finally hit some kind of a wall.

I wrote this post about why is my favorite Trek series back in 2008 and it’s still true to this day. I adore DS9 with all my heart. Spoliers ahead if you’ve not watched.

@gedeonm @Gte Yes, I love it so much! No life-or-death struggles or galactic stakes, just our characters having fun playing a game of baseball.

Yes, Draymond Green got ejected again last night, but this time it wasn't for a violent assault, only arguing with a ref. I think using his words rather than attempting murder is a very positive sign, and instead of fining him the league should give him a cookie. #NBA

My story about how telematics data from people's cars unexpectedly raised their insurance rates is on the front page today...

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/11/technology/carmakers-driver-tracking-insurance.html?unlocked_article_code=1.b00.DzhQ.GXkvg-kgWebx&smid=url-share

... and this is where it started: me lurking on car forums and seeing comments like this.

If this story doesn't convince lawmakers we need a strong federal privacy law, I'm not sure what will.

@Andres4NY @kashhill Of course! And it’s so practical for people with long commutes in a country where the oil and auto lobbies have systematically killed the kinds of public transportation projects that folks in Europe take for granted!

    @flockofnazguls Humans are excellent technical problem solvers. But there’s no evidence that ability translates to the ability to set up a just and peaceful governmental/economic system. It may well be a skill set we simply don’t possess.

    @virtualbri We're going to WDW in about a week for the 1st time in over 10 years, and my wife is having the hardest time wrapping her head around Genie, Genie+, Lightning Lanes, Individual Lightning Lanes, and Virtual Queues. Honestly I prefer the old system where you bought an admission ticket at the park entrance, then went and stood in line for the rides of your choice.

    In "Galaxy's Child", La Forge's response to Leah Brahms calling out his over-familiarity and telling him off for creating the holographic simulation of her has not aged well. She didn't give consent, so she has a right to feel violated.

    @lothcat Oh it's horrible. Her anger at him creating a holographic RealDoll of her without her consent is 1000% justified and his response is to . . . yell at her for not being nicer to him. Because he's a "nice guy" and therefore entitled to something from her? I'm not at all surprised that it was written by Maurice Hurley, the guy whose misogyny drove Gates McFadden away from the show, a guy so misogynist he made Rick Berman look like a feminist.

    @mattgriffin @virtualbri Jared Leto as an protagonist is about as appropriate as full-frontal nudity during an audience with the Pope.

    @mattgriffin @virtualbri It'll be a Tommy Wiseau impression.

    4gottenfuturist,
    @4gottenfuturist@worldkey.io avatar

    @virtualbri @mattgriffin Of course, his performance could also be a Neil Breen impression:
    "I can't believe you derezzed. I cannot believe you derezzed. How could you have done this, how could you have derezzed."

    4gottenfuturist,
    @4gottenfuturist@worldkey.io avatar

    @virtualbri @mattgriffin Breen may actually be more appropriate, since his characters are often seen “hacking” by randomly slapping the keyboards of broken laptops. And there was that time he played an android space Jesus with sticks of RAM glued to his forearms. If that’s not a Jared Leto character I don’t know what is.

    Watching a fav TOS ep - The Empath. I love this episode for a bunch of reasons like the Kirk/Spock/McCoy interplay but also because of the spectacular minimal set design.

    It feels surreal and not at all dated by today’s standards, almost theatrical. Just enough visual elements to tell the story and no more.

    Undoubtedly it was done for budget considerations but it works perfectly. Same reason why I love ‘Spectre of the Gun’.

    🖖

    Gem and Kirk walk past a minimal set of three arrow shaped arches, illuminated with bright yellows and golds in an otherwise pitch black background.

    In the Star Trek universe, virtually all aliens are humanoids with various minor uglification of their faces, speak perfect English (even without a "universal translator"), and their ships -- even on first contact -- immediately are able to establish audio and usually video communication instantly with Federation ships. But still no restrooms.

    @virtualbri @lauren According to the Okuda/Sternbach blueprints that’s the only public head on the ship. Don’t know what you’re supposed to do if your quarters are on Deck 4 and you’re working on Main Engineering when those chalupas you had for lunch suddenly hit you.
