Climate specialist with ACCAP/IARC at UAF, highlighting Alaska climate, environment & Indigenous cultures. Opinions are my own. I've been fascinated by #Arctic & #boreal #weather, #climate and #cultures for more than 50 years. I've worked as a weather & climate professional in private, public & academic spheres. I've been fortunate to live most of my life in Lower Tanana #Dene country near Fairbanks, #Alaska. Also, I have a big interest in Alaska Indigenous languages.

icymi I’d like to establish a new church, The 10,000 Year Church of Love and Space. Book-based religions have real staying power, so it makes sense to create one with the goal of maintaining a 10,000 year old technologically advanced civilization so that we can learn to explore space and actually eventually see what’s out there. Obviously to last this long we will have to reorient around healing and sustaining the miracle of our life-giving planet Earth, so that’s the central theme of our church

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@seachanger When I was part of UU back in the day we had a standing group to explore/discuss these kind of ideas.

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@esnyder @seachanger Depends on the specific UU congregation. My sense is US West Coast/Alaska don’t have much of that at all, especially compared to e.g. New England.

Iditarod 2024 leaders are on the Norton Sound coast, with Dallas Seavey already into Koyuk. It's a chilly morning but winds are not too strong.

Low temperatures in and around Alaska Thursday night/Friday morning.

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@ai6yr Nearly all of these are at community airports and so are in valleys, though valleys are at moderately high elevations in the Yukon and northern BC. The highest elevation site plotted here are Dease Lake, BC at 2680 ft MSL, Whitehorse, YT at 2300 ft MSL and Anaktuvuk Pass, AK at 2100 ft MSL. All the near coastal sites are within a couple hundred feet of sea level.

Winter 2023-24 climate summary for the Arctic is now out on the Alaska and Arctic Climate Newsletter. Yep, warm (relatively speaking).

Dene beadwork is world renowned for good reason.

natl’êdz nihkón’n "shiny beads"
natl’êdz nih’ées I’m sewing with beads

PS: if you're like me, this pix, showing beautiful beadwork by Maggie Roach (Upper Tanana Dene) brings on powerful sensory memory: just looking at this triggers the vivid smell of smoked moose hide.

Our home weather station is getting old and decrepit. What's a good one that works well in Fairbanks and preferably has a temperature range that goes below -40?

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@leepetersen Almost none of the consumer grade weather stations report temperatures lower than -40F, but @anisian might know if there is one. An important consideration is whether you want indoor display of info, online display, or both. If you can afford, a temperature unit that is fan-aspirated will be more accurate.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea as of March 2 is the highest so far this season in NSIDC data. Extent is now higher than this date last year and is typical for the first week in March. The ice edge remains well to the north and northeast of the Pribilof Islands. Reports in recent days from Nome to St. Lawrence Island note poor ice quality with ice appearing thin and weak.

Alaska and vicinity low temperatures Friday morning. Per the 'ol Johnny Horton song, "When it's springtime in Alaska it's forty below". With March 1st being the first day of climatological spring in the north, 2024 lives up to the song.

Fun climate factoid:
Winter 2023-24 for Juneau:
Average temperature 31.4F (-0.3C) which is warm enough to the "significantly above normal” category.
Snowfall: 108.2 inches (274.9cm) is almost double normal and the highest mid-winter snowfall since 2008-09.

Moral of the story: in cold climates, seasonal scale snowfall and temperatures can and do sometimes go in opposite directions.

Fairbanks, Alaska high temperature today of -9F (-22.8C) is the second lowest leap day high temperature in the past 116 years. Only February 29, 1956, with a high of -16F (-26.7C), was colder.

From the newsletter of Rep. Galvin, an opportunity to testify on a proposed state income tax.

I strongly support an income tax and view our current 44 year tax holiday as a huge mistake which has shifted vast sums of resource wealth to a single generation and set the next generations up for difficult times ahead.

#akleg

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@patrace So a tax of $4000 if you make $200,000 and $20 if you make $199,999? What could go wrong?

AlaskaWx,
@AlaskaWx@alaskan.social avatar

@patrace I’m 100% for an income tax.

Sea ice extent in the Bering Sea remains a bit below the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data There's been only limited variation in the position of the ice edge the past four weeks due to the frequently changeable winds. Maximum ice extent is typically reached in March, so there's still time for expansion, though with significant storm likely in the western Bering Sea later this week, bringing south to southeast winds, the clock is ticking.

Nerd alert: FWIW…current US Global Forecast Ensemble System has March definitely coming in like a lion over nearly all of Alaska. This morning's NBM has a March 1 low temp for Fairbanks of -31F /-35.0C.

Of course, what it's worth may be very little, though EPS same ballpark. @Climatologist49
